1 GB for $15? That's a very expensive add-on!

How my Mobile phone work:

1. I have a Voip.ms account with 2 local numbers. Cost $0.88 US a month. Cost of call is $0.09 a minute (Verus a Canadian pre-paid plan of average $0.40 a min). Or $4.95 a month flat monthly plan. One number is my personal number, other number is the home landline number. I don't call much so my total charge for a year on Voip is about $40 CAD.

2. I have a Fido Tablet plan. I bought this in Sept 2018. 2 years plan. 3 GB data. I also got a Free LG Tablet and a $100 Bestbuy Gift Card. Technically I am paying nothing for 2 years of data plan and I will renew it again in Sept which I assume they will have to give another Tablet for another 2 years of plan 🙂
I am paying $15 for this 3 GB. I have the same number all around the world. I can call anywhere in North America for the same 0.09 per minute from anywhere with Internet connection.

3. I have a backup per-paid phone with Petro Canada. I charge it $100 a year which never expire and I have it as a backup in case the internet goes down everywhere.

All the above sums up to $368 Tax-in for the one year. $736 for 2 years.
Deducting the unused Petro for 2 years ~ $180 and $100 Gift Card and the value of the tablet if I wanted to sell it $120, $736 - $400 = $336.

Comes to $168 a year or $14 a month for 3 plans. I think this is what I call an awesome deal.

Thanks for sharing.

To better understand Public Mobile (owned by Telus) take a look at their plans.
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/bc/plans

I did a comparison about a year ago and found that they gave me more for less than what I was getting from my "Loyalty Priced" Telus prepaid plan.

My plan is $15 but I pay $7 a month.
Wife's plan is $15 but pay $13 a month.

Neither of us are heavy mobile phone users. Our plans include 250MB of data a month that we rarely use all. At Christmas Public gave us 1 GB of data each and 400 Minutes of International (including USA) calling free. Recently I won another 1 GB of data.

Yes expensive DATA compared to others...but does not expire. So we have years of use.

1GB add on is usually $30 and 250mb is $10 so $15 was a deal.

We do same as you with Voip.ms with 1 local number, $4.95 flat rate incoming, and per minute outgoing. Our cost is about $12.50 a month CDN. We have all Voip.ms calls forward to our cell phones as well since all inbound calls to PM are free. So we rarely miss a call.

Also have an App called Zoiper on smart phone (makes it a soft phone) to use the Voip.ms account on...using wifi or data.

Not sure why you are calling that mobile or are comparing to 40 cents a minute.

What do you use the 3GB of data for, on your tablet?

You have the same number on tablet? Do you mean your Voip.ms number is on your tablet?

Good you have a back up phone. I leave my mobile phone on night stand (no I don't look at it!!) due to our age, loss of internet, and considering the worst case scenario to call 911.

I don't have a total cost but if I added a $5 of calling time to my wife's phone a month I can see dropping Voip.ms and port our home number to her mobile phone.

I like to customise to meet our needs and be more up to date AND to save money!!!

Any one else have a share story??

The kicker with Public atleast in Ontario is that data speeds are at 3g vs a 4g (normal) equivalent.. So you gonna get less then what most expect here atleast.. Be mad its' slow if you actually use data - and then move somewhere else..

Telus (Full Service Shop) 4G+ Speeds.
Koodo (Full Service Option/Mostly Self Serve Shop) 4G+ Speeds.
Public (Entirely Self Serve Shop - Limited staff - No CSRs - Community based support) 3G only Ontario apparently.

Telus is going to need help.. I'm already looking for options to replace Koodo after a decade of never missing payments etc.. When they readjusted the tab the value of remaining "loyal" to Koodo is pointless.. More value on the Public side that way..

That's great you are a voip.ms customer too. I also use Zoiper on my phone. So the tablet is only for kids to play with (on WiFi) and I take it when travelling in case my phone stopped working.
I use the Sim card (with the tablet plan) on my cell phone and it is basically my number from voip that get called.

Help me understand please.

Even though I could get my home phone for $5 with Telus there is so much I can do with voip.ms I don't think I would change.

Zoiper, on a mobile phone with data or wifi....correct??

So the tablet is only for kids to play with (on WiFi)

Got it!!

I take it when travelling in case my phone stopped working

Got it!! You have another mobile phone with a plan as well?

I use the Sim card (with the tablet plan) on my cell phone and it is basically my number from voip that get called.

So is the SIM card for data only or from a phone plan that has date included?
And thus the number? Is there a difference with a DATA only plan (no calling)?
