Yeah any decent smart watch you want to link it to a phone to utilize all its functions for sure to utilize functions like checking text, voice calling etc.

You must have a vision of 20/5 or better to be able to read sms, email, etc. on 'smart watch'.
What kind of watch is a watch you have to charge every few days? Do you REALLY believe in all those 'health' parameters such gizmo tracks? Do you sleep with it to monitor how many turns you do per night?
But it looks like you have to have that watch AND phone in order to utilize usefulness of both units. Isn't then just a phone is enough? Keep it in a handy waist pouch (fanny pack) and you will get your steps and phone will be always handy to do other things if you have to.

I am still old fashioned and prefer good Seiko, Orient, Tissot MECHANICAL automatic watch; or if you have to have electronic gizmo get good Casio, solar powered, radio ('atomic') controlled watch.
I would NEVER exchange my automatic watch for utterly overpriced, status symbol BS iwatch or whatever it is called.

I don't see any material* advantage in a Google/Apple Watch to even consider one. My phone is more than enough, including use of Google Wallet.

My wristwatch is a solar powered Citizen Eco-Drive now about 15 years old and working like a charm. KISS principle.

*The primary plus in my view is it always being 'with you' and not having to remember to bring along a phone attached to one's hip. Maybe we need to evolve to have a kangaroo pouch on our abdomens.

Me too.
Only mechanical automatic wristwatches (Orient, Seiko) and solar powered Citizen Eco-Drive for 55 years now.
I like them and do not have any desire to take any smartwatch even for free.

I can sense a big generation gap or 2.

Luckily the no smart watch no smart phone view is the minority, not the majority.
Or we will see very little advance in technology if everyone thinks "i don't need this, i don't need that, my 50 years old watch is fine etc"

There won't even be the internet for us to "discuss" the topic !

It is more a practicality issue. A smart watch has limited functionality so how many devices should we have?

How would you explain 'advance in technology' when 99% of current young generation cannot live without tiktok, constant checking face.bs.book and similar 'intellectual' activities.
Modern technology just brought massive amount of idiotic ads, gambling ads, you name it.
Internet was designed to exchange ideas, learn new things. Every human and their cat and dog has a smart phone with camera creating zillion of useless videos trying to be ... what? Remembered by their stupidity?
Taking photos was an art a while ago. Get a good camera, learn how to use it, frame the scene, etc.
Today if you see an accident what you do? Pull a phone, make a short video to upload somewhere to get 'like and subscribe' and and then, maybe, ask 'are you ok?'
Now every kid's dream is to be a 'content creator' or 'influencer' or 'game developer'.

Anyway, nothing to do with 'land line' topic but I do not like where world is going...

@cad

I hear you!

BUT.

For me the internet replaces mail, in person visits to the bank, the newspaper and allows me to manage my retirement funds. And I do wordel daily.

For younger generations, they use the internet or data instead of TV, listening to the music on radio, and paying for goods using Google or Apple Pay. They are glued to it a show very poor manners when they should be social. Young mothers pushing a child in a carriage totally miss letting the child to look at the sky, a dog, a big truck etc. Why, because they are on their phone! So annoying to see parents and children to be less worldly.

So what the internet is for……it depends on age, school, employment.

I quit wearing a watch when I retired. And could care less what a smart could do for me. Nor do I want one because they are the thing to have. I use my phone for the time. When I forget my phone I look at the sun and guess the time.

Pretty sure you can ask Bell to remove you from the phonebook but you may have to pay...

Yes, it is possible to have an unlisted number for an extra $$$ a month.

One would think logically that all landline phones should automatically be unlisted and a charge would only apply if the customer (say "Big Ed's Autoshop) wants to be listed. Instead, Bell has it backwards.

Telus was same. And I think a new subscriber had the option to not have number listed.

But……we haven’t had a phone book delivered for years. Is that the way we are going? Or is it because we don’t have a Shaw or Telus land line.

The landline phonebook is online via 411.ca look up. AFAIK, if one wants an unlisted number, one needs to pay up in order not to show up on 411.ca.

If u want to look up the phone number / address of a company,
Use google maps. It even has opening hours too !

Yes the internet can be useful depends on how you use it.

Re TikTok completely, I do learn a thing or two watching some videos.

Let’s not be biased and just hate technology for the sake of hating it, just because it’s outside one’s comfort zone.

As for copper landline and traditional watch, it does one thing and one thing only. I prefer something that has the ability to multitask.

Do you think unlisted number will protect you from scammers?
I do not think so. I believe scammers and all other robocalls use cute dialing program: start from 416-xxx-xxx1 and keep calling and increasing last digits by 1. Mark inactive numbers (#1), mark human answers (somebody is alive there willing to pick it up #2), mark voicemails (active numbers #3).
Next time call only #2 and #3. Etc.

An unlisted number will prevent some one from associating your name or address to that phone number. That's about it. Some may see the need for that.

I would add VOIP to that also, but only VOIP numbers transferred from landline directly to VOIP.

If landline number was first transferred to mobile and later to VOIP, it will NOT appear at 411.ca

Real Land line transferred to VOIP will NOT appear at 411.ca. Nor will name of the person be found there.

Real Bell land line transferred to Bell VOIP will continue to be at 411.ca, as they were before with name of the person.

I have 3 real confirmations of that.

That is MAYBE because it was transferred to BELL voip. And maybe because Bell has some money invested in 411.ca.
My REAL BELL was transferred to my ISP voip and does not appear ANYWHERE anymore no matter do I search by name or phone number.
