If you are a university (or perhaps college) grad, you might want to look into the affinity insurer offered by your alumni department.

I have never actually gotten around to doing this, so can't comment on how it works out but maybe worth a look. Perhaps someone else has experience with this.

Other affinity groups and associations also offer these kinds of programmes but I have no details.

The idea behind it is that people who fit into certain categories tend to have fewer claims, so the insurance is a bit cheaper.

You can get affinity price with Belair Direct through Perkopolis for some employers.

If you pay yearly, you don't need to put it as a automatic debit off your bank account, they'll take it the single payment on a credit card, so it's easier to cancel.

I knew an elderly lady who hit someone with her car and was sued for $1.5 million. Her insurance company, Co-operators, told her not to worry another minute and handled everything until a few years later when the suit was eventually dropped.

That's what I have insurance for, something big happens, couldn't care less about the small stuff, and thus I'm very hesitant to deal with these newer, online-only outfits, not so sure how they'd be if the ess really hit the fan. Maybe I'm biased because I'm older, I just don't have the same level of trust re their service.

I just offer my experience to OP. It is plausible that some people might have bad experiences with Belair Direct. They do promote the use of their app for all insurance needs, and that's not out of the ordinary for companies nowadays. Having said that, they are fully accessible on the phone and on the web as well. I had no issues with them over the years.

I'll disagree, regarding their accessibility. It was the reason I left Belair. I couldn't reach them by phone in a reasonable time or manner. I left multiple messages and requests. Eventually, I had to just suck it up and wait on hold forever, just to tell them to cancel my policy.

Are you in or near flood or fire zones in BC?

No flood exposure here. But like most of rural BC, our acreage is partially forested ... and that's what's probably driving the renewal premium Up⬆.

In these last few days I've been doing some Major Shopping (both online & local brokers). By tomorrow I should have as many as six quotes in my Hot little hands. sf-smile

Until then . . .

We've used SGI Canada for all of our home insurance needs so far. Have always been the most competitive for us on pricing, available coverage, add-ons, and coverage limits. We're out here in SK, but they do provide home policies from BC to ON.

We had a claim once (knock on wood), and it was pretty smooth dealing with our adjuster. We had one little issue during our claim (which was open for roughly 18 months because it occurred in winter and couldn't be repaired until the weather changed...you get the idea), but we had great communication with her and had it resolved to our satisfaction.

I've had Wawanesa for tenant insurance and have had family who have used Wawanesa for home insurance as well. They're no longer competitive in our area on pricing or offered coverage.

My 2-cents.

My home insurance policy with Intact Insurance is due for renewal next month, and I've already received the renewal papers ... and the new, Much Larger premium (Ouch ❗ sf-surprised).

We've had no claims (ever) and no other problems, but there's such a huge increase in our renewal premium, that I'm compelled to go shopping.

In addition to getting quotes from the usual Agents & Brokers, does anyone here have any experience with 'online' insurers like The Cooperators, TD Insurance, etc. ?

Thanks,

    Dean

Well ... the results are in now, and I'm both Surprised & Shocked . . .

I obtained quotes from Four different Online insurers, and Five different quotes from two local brokers. Even though I made a point of comparing only apples-with-apples, None of the quotes were better than the renewal offer from my present insurer (Intact) ❗

Two of the quotes were close @ +$100 to $200, but the rest of them where Way more expensive, by as much as ~ +$700.

So ... I'm going to have to suck-it-up, and stay with Intact. 'Shopping Around' usually Pays, but this time it didn't.

Go Figure sf-confused

That's a common tactic among insurers to discourage rate-shopping. I suspect first-year commissions to brokers are involved. They all co-operate to offer a renewal discount.

Look into whether you can qualify for any specialized discounts such as auto clubs, supermarket memberships, professional associations or the like.

      Bin There ... Dun That . sf-smile

But in spite of my present insurer offering the best deal I could find, my renewal premium still went Up ~30% from last year ... even with No Claims (Ever), and a spotless insurance record otherwise.

I live in a small town in Southwestern Ontario and have been with Intact for 17 years without a claim. My renewal was in April and I was surprised that my premium increased by 15% but I guess I should be thankful it wasn’t 30%. (The previous increases were 9% from 2021 to 2022 and 11% from 2022 to 2023.)

I hear ya, BillieBob

What's driving my renewal premium so much Higher, is most likely my south-central BC, partially forested, rural acreage.

Life in the country is nice, and it has it's many advantages. But it also has it's Costs ... Ka-Ching ❗❗

I've been with Belair for nearly 2 decades. On 2 occasions I've moved to another company and then they've bought them. I was thinking of moving away from them again as they raised our car and house insurance by 19 and 13% respectively even though we've never made any claims and are located in low risk areas with a low risk car for thieves.

Then the first company I was looking to get a quote from was purchased by Belair. It's nearly impossible to escape the gouge monopolies in this country.

I would like to consider getting the discount by using their app, but we don't drive enough to qualify or have a smartphone and data plan, yet we qualify for a nearly 20% increase in premiums.

One's personal claim experience and set of conditions (location et al) are only 2 factors in the setting of rates relative to what others pay with prior claims history and/or hazardous regional sets of conditions.

That is separate and distinct from a blanket percentage increase in rates across the board due to a host of other environmental factors such as floods, wind and wildfires, skyrocketing auto collision repair costs, etc. All of us pay for those 'regional' factors even if we individually have not been responsible for any of those costs. My house did not burn down last year in the wildfire but some 400 other houses did, and a few years before that, an entire village burned. My premium will go up to help cover those insured costs. That is how 'insurance' works.

Cars are more expensive, parts are more expensive, more and more complicated stuff has to be at expensive dealers, and the like. Here in B.C., the lawyers are cut out of it and we're protected - only by the elimination of pain, suffering and diminished life payouts.

It goes without saying that the property, contents, as well as its location, will affect the insurance premiums. I have been with Belair Direct for many years. Very seldom claims, but usually due to prolonged power outage. This company offers the normal coverage one seeks, and the premiums one can live with. Several years ago, we added home insurance to our existing car insurance with Belair Direct. We had no hassle claims, and was easy to deal with them. If not mistaken, they were bought off by Intact Insurance several years ago, but maintained its operations under its name. Have not received the renewal yet, as many would know premium increases are not only to pass on inflation costs, but most importantly, to cover the company liabilities for paid claims. All I can say is try them out.

You are right. However, SquareOne is a 100% subsidiary of Mutual Fire Insurance company of British Columbia.

Does anybody have experiences with claims with SquareOne.

I can't comment on that , but I do know this ... SquareOne is Not an insurance company, it's an insurance 'Brokerage' https://www.squareone.ca/about-us

Any related claims involved, are handled by others.

Too many folks mistake insurance brokers and insurance agencies for insurance companies. Few insurance companies have their own proprietary agencies. It is the latter which ultimately matters for claims.

Not necessarily , Fritz23.

But if you're going to get insurance through SquareOne, be aware of the insurance companies they are brokers for.

A quote from the link I posted above (Post #37) :

"We are authorized to issue, bill and service policies on behalf of our underwriters. For home insurance, we represent The Mutual Fire Insurance Company of British Columbia. For car insurance, we represent Zurich Insurance Company Ltd."

.
