Haha, sorry, I clicked on this thread PRECISELY because I grew up on a farm and thought, "My father would think you're RIDICULOUS for WANTING to buy a farm." 😉
Best of luck to you, though. I've always felt that growing up on a farm was fortunate for me to have that experience in life because, as an adult, I am so mechanically DISINCLINED and hate commuting/traveling long distances for groceries, seeing the doctor, etc., that I would never have lived on one by choice. 🙂
Location is important. We used to live in Oakville. Since we bought a farm our travel time to see the doctor or buy groceries has not changed. Had we stayed in Oakville, it would have increased. The distance did increase but we no longer sit in traffic.
Our neighbours are a lot further though so could be an issue for some. On a positive side, we spend a lot more time talking to them and visiting them. In Oakville, our neighbour to the left used to vigorously nod and run away in response to “hello”. His English wasn’t up to much; must have been one of those Chinese investments into Canadian real estate. The neighbour on the right could speak English fine but for whatever reason he only ever did when talking to our dog. He then sold to an investor who knocked the house down and tried to build something massive shading surroundings in breach of local regulations.
