From Wealthsimple:
“Interest in your margin account begins accruing daily at the end of the day a trade is initiated, regardless of when you transfer in money. The interest is based on your borrowed amount (margin used), the interest rate, and how long you borrow the money. For example, if you use $10,000 CAD of margin, you'll be charged interest for each day until the trade settles, even if you transfer in money on settlement day.”

I believe with my other brokerages margin is not accrued unless funds are not in my account ON the settlement date, not before the settlement date.

I think they do this because they need to keep the funds available. Somewhat similar to a standby line of credit.
