JUST CALLED TANGERINE. THEY WOULD NOT OFFER ANY HIGHER THAN 1.6% AND WOULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY SOME ARE GETTING 2.5%. SOME RETENTION PROGRAM. ANY THOUGHTS?
Just the usual no rhyme or reason to who gets offers and who doesn't. I'm sure there's some mystery algorithm somewhere they use to decide who gets an offer and at what rate. I give up phoning and begging for a better rate. Found it's just best to wait for the promo... those rates always seem to be better than what some miserable minion in a cubicle working on a stat holiday can offer. Mine is sitting in Tang checking as of today. Don't like or don't get an offer by Wednesday, it's off to EQ.

I wouldn't leave anything in chequing for 2 reasons.
They may decide to do like some of the others and count the total of ALL the accounts held at Tangerine.
The other reason being that the more people that move their money OUT altogether may make it a bit more difficult for them (less funds at the end of the day for their operations).

I disagree with Righand re: chequing account.
Money in a chequing account is not available to the bank in the same way that savings might be. You may have written a cheque on the entire amount, so they have to deal with the possibility that it's not really there. It's just as "gone" as the money in the savings account.

I just called and was only offered .8 which was already noted on my account. I talked to a rep and said maybe it is time to close my account. He said he'd be able to do that while I was talking to him. Absolutely no desire to satisfy a customer of over fourteen years. They just don't care anymore!

I believe that generally, people being offered the 2.5% have over 100k in the account and have been a client for at least 2 years but I could be wrong on this.
So obviously this is more misguided speculation about TING's algorithms
Haven't seen anything proposed yet that's supported by the evidence, other than 'random' ... which I don't believe ... but it's not obvious.

The Bank of Canada is ramping up to hike its benchmark interest rate — possibly as soon as next week. It looks as if those people in Tangerine remain oblivious to these reports (CBC) and offer such insulting rates!

Then it's sitting in the chequing in launch position, ready to rocket over to EQ. Only thing i don't like is they give you virtually no interest for 2 or 3 days while you wait to see what , if any, offer you get.

Tangerine Chequing Account interest rates:
0.65% ($100,000 +)
0.55% ($50,000 - $100,000)

You missed one:
Tangerine Chequing Account
$0.00 - $49,999.99
0.15%
$50,000.00 - $99,999.99
0.55%
$100,000.00 or more
0.65%
Stupid question. Do you get .15 on the first 50K and .55 on remainder up to100K or once you cross the 50K mark you get .55 on the entire balance? Either way...less than 1% is "virtually nothing"

Curious to know - is there a promotion EVERY quarter? (whether one gets the offer or not)
Today I called Tang saying I wanted to move my money out to get higher interest elsewhere, and was offered 2.5% for 3 months. I took it as it's better than EQ and I'm maxed out there anyways.
However, I'm wondering if I should have just moved the money out and waited to see if there was a new money promo like the 3.21% I was enjoying for the last 3 months.
I guess I will find out in the next few days!
Now that I've basically forfeited any summer promo by taking the 2.5 retention offer, I will definitely be pulling out at end of September. Hoping for another juicy 4th quarter promo like last year. ...What a ridiculous game we play.
