I just logged into Tangerine this evening and had a message in My Insights saying that they are extending my promotional rate of 1.4% to July 10. That is about a 6 week extension to my current offer which was scheduled to end on May 26. No phone call involved, basically unsolicited. I am happy about that.

MG, it's a trap.
MG, go digging in the old tangerine threads. They extended my offer by 45 days and in that time, their intetest rate dropped by a 1/4%. I would have been better off NOT getting the extension, and they'd still have my money. The world would be a better place without the likes of tangerine. Take that to the bank.

It’s not a trap if you can withdraw your money anytime. My question is therefore.. How would you be better off not taking the extension? Â
I also see it as a trap. Ask yourself, why didn't they extend the offer to July 31 instead of July 10 ?
Now the OP is being shifted out of the lottery window (I have never seen a lottery offered after the 10th of a month) so now the OP has to phone in and beg once this extension has expired.

it is true if u are not part of the big lottery window, its a pain to try to get a promo. Even if they offer u a promo rate when u call in, it will be lower than if u win the big lottery.
I have personal experience under ALL the scenarios as I have been with them since it was owned by ING

Okay, so you are saying being in the lottery is your method for getting the best interest rate! Weird, I thought it was watching the rates and offers on this site. If you can access your money it’s not a trap.
Remember to spend a thousand dollars a month on lottery tickets because you just might win the lotto 6/49!

Vatox.
I will explain why tangerine's extension offer was a trap, or try to.
I was getting 1.8%.
My offer of 1.8% was to end on jan 22 2021
The rates on jan 22 2021 were, 1.75% on new money, 1.65% on all money
I received a 45 day extension, at 1.8% to march 8th
When the 45 days ended, the rates offered were at least .25% lower if not more.
Some were offered 1.2 others 1.3 and 1.4 on old money. 1.5 on new
So what i am saying. On Jan 22 i would have taken 1.65% for 5 months
On march 8th. I told tangerine to drop dead at an offer of 1.4% for 5 months
I was extended into a lower rate cycle.
The extension thread is under tangerine, i created it, look for youself.

I read the extension thread and I still don’t see the “trap”. Was 1.75% for 5 months offered at the same time as the 1.8% extension? I’m thinking you were assuming they would offer you 1.75% after the extension ended or that had you declined the extension a 1.75% for 5 months would have appeared. Either way is just wishful thinking. Where is the trap?

I asked myself that question and the answer was that Tang was not going to put me in the lottery for the next promo and so gave a 45 day extension as a token. It isn’t instead of, it’s better than nothing. I see the extension as being nice, it’s not a trap it’s getting something rather than nothing!
EDIT: OP doesn’t have to phone in and beg! Just move the money out.

Just say...
A) you want to buy something today. The cost is $10.
B) the store gives you a $2 coupon off the item you want to buy BUT the coupon comes into effect... next week.
C) so you put off your purchase to use the $2 coupon... next week
D) HEY it's next week, and tangerine have increased the price of the item you want buy to $13.
A) rate available before my extension 1.65% all MONEY, 1.75% new money.
B) 45 day extension = coupon
D) new rate 1.2%, 1.3%, 1.4%. The new rate = the new $13 price

Again, I will ask, were the other offers given as a choice? Because if they weren’t offered, they weren’t an option. The $10 for the item is available and deciding to wait a week to use the coupon means risking a price change. I don’t think the other options were ever an opportunity for you.
It’s pure speculation and gambling to think you would have been offered something else had the extension not occurred.

From the other tangerine extension thread..Tangerine locked me into a 45 day extension, it wasn't by my choice. Â
Exactly my point! You got 45 extra days versus nothing! There is no way of knowing if you would have been offered anything had that extension not happened.
If you preferred to not have an automatic 45 day extension and taken a chance, then you are a gambler. There is no trap.
It’s interesting that you say you would have accepted 1.75 yet it was never offered and to have the entitled notion that you would have gotten that without the extension is poor analysis.
In other words, they gave you 45 days of extension because they never had any inclination to give you 5 months at 1.75 and that’s better than nothing. Plenty of us get nothing!
EDIT: it could be considered a trap had the extension been an option.
