Hello
First time Tangerine Bank customer having a hard time transferring money between Scotiabank to Tangerine.
The linked account feature failed so trying it again with help of Tangerine customer service rep.
Scotiabank customer service rep says the email accounts for Scotiabank and Tangerine need to be different for e-transfer to work!
This seems to be a ridiculous requirement.
How does anyone with different bank accounts at different financial institutions manage? A different email for each FI?
Anyone else have to jump though these hoops, or is there a simple way to transfer money between Scotia and Tangerine?

Is there a chance you have AutoDeposit turned on at any one of the institutions? It won't work if that is the case.

Spouse can e-transfer from RBC to Scotia with the same email address, but because she does not have AutoDeposit turned on at either one, she gets to select which FI she wants the e-transfer to go too once she receives the recipient email from Interac.

P.S. It is not a big deal to have several email addresses. Indeed, it is often prudent to have at least a few, one for financial institutions, another for X, another for Y, etc.

Laurentian and B2B are the same-
They use the same software platform, so a unique email id is required-- just log in--, clearly going into the same database

Autodeposit is off, I did check.

If Scotia and Tangerine use same software platform it may make sense. Email being the unique ID for each customer for both banks in the same database.

Will try using a different email for Tangerine.

Actually, I would turn on Autodeposit on the receiving side & give it a try as well. That should bypass answering the security question and picking the bank to deposit to.

Are you talking about Interac email transfer? If yes, why can't you just try sending $5 from Scotiabank to the same email address and see how it goes.

If there is autodeposit setup, Scotiabank should warn you, and if not - the email will go through and you'll have to pick a bank to where deposit funds. Pick Tangerine.
If that works, here is your money transfer process for larger amounts.

The banks don't hesitate to remind us that E-mail is not secure or reliable. Is there any reason to not use the direct deposit/direct debit mechanism, other than perhaps a small speed advantage?

There are FIs that require paperwork (including filing actual paper form) to link external account. For infrequent transferring of small amounts that is too inconvenient comparing with Interac.

Example:

Add An Account
To add a new external account to your list of linked accounts, please download and complete the Me-to-Me Money Transfer Authorization form .
NOTE:
To complete this process you must print and sign the authorization form and send it to us along with a void cheque by fax, email or mail.

Just for the record, keep in mind that it is VERY EASY to have unlimited email addresses but all ending up in the same inbox IF you have gmail (as much as I hate Google's nosy monitoring of my emails).

You can either introduce one or more "." in the email and gmail treats it as the same, e.g. myemail@gmail.com = my.email@gmail.com = m.y.e.mail@gmail.com.

Another way is to append '+' to your email with the same result, e.g. myemail+tang@gmail.com = myemail@gmail.com.

You can use this for sign-ins, subscriptions, and many other uses. Once arriving into your inbox, you can use filters to apply labels to group things, or even to redirect your emails to other email addresses.

CAVEAT: Some websites do not accept the '+', so YMMV.
