Looks like Tang has data saying that the rates/inflation are going to stay high for 3-5 years. Time to grab some of these.

If it’s indeed true inflation are going to stay high for 3-5years, short rates will stay high too and no need to lock in for longer terms, just saying.

We have no idea what the future inflation/interest rates will be.

Makes sense to diversify to protect yourself against all scenarios, and this is a decent 5 year rate.

Good enough for me 5%-5yrs... the 5 handle is what got me (higher rates 1-2 years but 1st thing U know times up - nice if rates keep going up but ...) in 5 years prob be a new guy as president (with whoever wins in between)

I wouldn't put in any economic forecast based on what 1 bank - especially Tangerine does with their longer term rates. Their 2 year is 3.6 - at the bottom of the barrel. The 5% is likely that they need to lock in more money 3-5 years out, to balance loans and such.

Think Again, Dude ❗

2-3 years from now, GIC rates will most likely be ... In-The-Dog-House.

Not sure what you consider "in the doghouse". I think rates will reduce slowly. The rate drops in 2020-2021 were excessive and definitely helped to fuel inflation - that cannot be repeated.

Anybody get this email from Tang?

Here’s what you need to know:

"We’ll email you the details when you can ‘Activate’ your offer to earn an exclusive rate of 5.75% interest."

"Remember, keep your new deposits in place – and you can always add more until August 31, 2024."

Yes, I got the same e-mail. It sounds like the funds can stay where they are on May 31, and not move out of Tang. for greener pastures as the balance for new funds qualification is still the existing Jan. 1, 2024 date. We'll have to wait and see the activate e-mail.

Yes, I read it the same way. Is it a trick? This is a major change from their "new" fund policy.

P.S. Wouldn't it be simpler if Tang simply extended the end date for the current promotion from May31st to August 31st? What am I missing?

It's not a trick, but a targeted extension offer, they've done it before on a number of occasions.

Tangerine did just that end of April, just before a targeted offer was to end on April 30.

Reported here and also discussed in Tangerine continues the high interest promo till July 31?.

The weird thing is that I just got a message in my Tangerine account that says "Just a reminder that your 5.75% rate is ending in 5 days." Hopefully this doesn't supersede the new extension offer.

Thanks. New experience for me.

Question: Did Tang honour the extension?
