Spouse's promo ended yesterday, she called this evening, right away was offered 2.25% for 150 days after she declined suggestion for GIC.

Wait, what? Those of us coming off the same promo as your spouse who are getting the next promo are only getting 2.2% !!!

Tangerine is counting on those that were offered the 2.2% to feel like they had won the lottery. It's simple low-balling and probably quiet strategic as they will be counting on those that accept the offer to leave their funds on deposit until November 30, meanwhile the BoC increases rates in the interim. Win,win Tangerine.

The 2.2% promo has an accept by date of May 31 and I'm almost tempted to drag it out before accepting, possibly ignoring it and rolling the dice to see if I would get targeted later on for a higher rate. June 1 and the BoC announcement is only a month away and it would not surprise me if there's a .50% jump.

From experience, I'd be surprised if that were to happen. Tang has their promos "grouped", I mean, they wait typically 3-4 months before offering a new promo to people coming out of one at present. This one, 2.2% is more like a "continuation" of promo, and not an "upgrade" such as 2.8%. If they'll give you a much higher one in June, it means they have no established pattern of granting promos.

I haven't received message from Tangerine in my inbox, as they promised, but this morning opened my account in browser and saw this:

My-Tangerine.jpg

Promo rate only applies to Savings account, not Checking, TFSA or RRSP. This is emphasized during the rate activation.

No email yet either. The day is young. The offer wasn't there when I logged in at 6AM but it is there now. Not unusual for offers to be available before the email is sent.

2.2% calculated daily, paid monthly on all non-registered Canadian savings accounts up to $5,000,000. All balances (existing and new) May 3 to Nov 30, 2022.

Question: Even if you don't like the promo, what is the downside (if any) in enrolling?

The only downside I can think of is that you would be excluded from receiving any offers that may have a higher interest rate for the next six months. If interest rates were expected to stay stable over that period, then yes, it's a good offer.

My wife is on a 2.4% TNG promo thru Aug. That gives us 2 CDIC's at TNG. At the rate rates are going, there should be something better by Aug end either from TNG or EQB or OAK or HUB ...

It's only a Downside if you allow it.
If rates go up to say 3.25% and TING won't bump it up (from 2.2%), there is nothing to stop a person from transferring $ to another FI that is offering, for example, 3.25% (or so).

I'm on a 2% promo rate until end of June, downside is I wasn't considered for 2.8% or 2.2% rate promos due to being on promo status already. If you're not on promo already you're a prime target for current promos, it seems.

From reading the fine print of the offer, USD savings account is not included. The offer is intended for non-registered CAD savings only.

.
I activated Tang's 2.20% SA special offer today. The offer applies to existing money already in the account & future deposits. It's good through Nov. 30th, with no strings attached.

It's nothing to get excited about, but "It's Better Than A Kick In The Pants". sf-wink

FYI...

I was on the 2% promo thru Apr 30 when I was advised by TNG email on Apr 25 that this 2.2% was coming for May 3.

Bill, I was also on a 2% promo rate until the end of June. Inspired by some of the posts in this thread, I called Tangerine today. Waited on hold for about 20 minutes (not too traumatic if you have hands-free/speakerphone). The CSR I spoke to said that they couldn't offer me anything better. I politely asked to speak to a manager to see if more options were available.

After about another 20 minute wait, I spoke with a manager who offered me 2.25% on all funds (including existing) until Sep 30. I told him honestly that it would probably take 2.5% for me to be confident of keeping my funds at Tangerine until that time. He understood my position, but said that 2.25% was the best he could do. I said OK (why not?). He was pleasant, I was pleasant. Even Tangerine's hold music was surprisingly pleasant -- flutes, I believe it was.

So, if you've got an hour or so and a hands-free phone, I'd say go for it. If I can get 2.25% then I figure anyone else can. Even though I go all the way back to the ING ("save your money") days and have bought several GICs from them, I've never been in the inner circle of customers who get the best rates. I dunno. Maybe it's my after shave.
