Recently, I changed the edit permissions on this site from "edit your own posts forever" to "edit your own posts only until there has been a reply". (see https://www.highinterestsavings.ca/forum/site-suggestions/jack-manning/#post12570)
A few forum members suggested that "edit your own posts until there has been a reply" was too restrictive and was preventing them from making corrections. (see https://www.highinterestsavings.ca/forum/gic/3-00-to-3-05-gics-are-the-best-we-can-get/page-2/#post12797)
I've modified the permissions so that they are now "edit your own posts for 24 hours". Hopefully that strikes a balance between allowing corrections and preventing people from changing the conversation history well after the fact. If there are special cases that require edits more than 24 hours after the post was submitted, please send me a PM or use the "Report Post" button.

Thanks for the flexibility, Peter.
I don't know why this site seems to have attracted this behaviour of massive retractions. Hopefully it's just 2 or 3 people and that will be the end of it.
I belong to another forum on a totally different topic, which has tens of thousands of members, perhaps 100s of thousands. It really huge, with a worldwide membership, but most people would only be interested in a small number of categories within it. It runs very efficiently and I have never seen this kind of behaviour. I think you can edit your posts indefinitely, or at least for quite a while, as I have never had a problem going back to revise something I said earlier. Members fall all over themselves trying to help each other, essentially running errands for each other all over the world. Someone is doing that for me this week. He is a complete stranger to me, and I accept his offer in the spirit in which it is given. I have had a lot of help like this, and have given it when I can. It sort of restores your faith in humanity!
Rules are only invented when people are doing the opposite.

That would be chaotic. People could go back indefinitely and change numbers and context without even advising they had edited the content. That could make following posts by members responding to that initial post useless, or at the very least confusing. Don't make members folllowing up with responses look stupid. Hence the 24 hr rule is a good compromise. One needs to remember that content posted becomes public information and owned by the forum. It no longer belongs exclusively to the poster.

Peter, I like to be able to edit my posts without any restrictive timeframes. As I go back to something, sometimes years later, I may want to add to it, post a quick reply to "bump" it back up to the top and go from there. I'd like to look at going back to that, with the proviso that the forum's rules be amended to restrict excessive quoting. For instance, quoting should be limited to one prior post and perhaps even a character limit within the quote. Or, better yet, limit quoting to linking to the relevant postID's URL and who posted it - that way, as that prior post is amended, the person's old content won't stay stagnant in the replied post.
Cheers,
Doug

I like the idea of adding in an "last edited by username". People shouldn't retroactively edit their post(s) to make the other guy look stupid.

I believe I should be able to edit my post for at least an hour after posting, max 2h. Sometimes you say something you did not mean to, or you get annoyed by other poster and reply in anger.
Something similar to delayed mail in Outlook.
Being able to edit your own post at any time without restriction has no point. At that point of time YOU thought THIS is the right reply. It is silly to wait a year or two and they say well I did not mean that so lets change my post (after it generated heated discussion or whatnot).
You have to THINK first before start typing. Or use text editor, type, vent out, think about and then post.

I wonder if there is a feature in WordPress that would allow for "version management" so what you originally said is "struck through" and what you are now saying is put in place.
Thus, "what I said today" when edited to "what I corrected it to tomorrow" would appear as:
what I said todaywhat I corrected it to tomorrow.
Date versioning would also make sense.
But perhaps that is hoping for too much. A second choice would be to be able to add new text to a post to correct a previous entry without being able to delete any of the previous entry.

I agree with GS, if it can be done. Otherwise, I think a 1/2 hour window should be good as 24 hours is too long which will allow people to get rid of comment in that will cause problem in understanding conversation in the future.
If people really want to fix what they say, they can just refer to the post's number on the top left conner and suggest what they want to say in subsequent post.

"Time to edit post"? .... How about actually getting your post posted in the first place. I have been waiting almost a week to see my post displayed and it is still "awaiting moderation". Not impressed.
Sorry GMH: I recently enabled "first post moderation" and completely missed your post. It is now approved!
