Although this forum is most typically used for suggestions to the Canadian HISA website and community forum, I am using it as a general suggestion and solution to the problem of linking to paywalled Globe & Mail article, legally. Currently, the only way to legally refer to portions of a Globe article is to copy and quote from it directly, within the limitations of Fair Dealing under the Canadian Copyright Act. Copying and pasting the entire article, or substantially all of the article, aren't permitted. Linking to the Globe article on the Globe's website, while legal, is frustrating for non-Globe subscribers (and a non-promotional print-only 52-week subscription to the Globe now runs over $900 CAD per year, before applicable GST)--an expensive proposition for most Canadians! 🙂
Fortunately, most public libraries in Canada offer access to nearly all Canadian and international newspapers through PressReader. For a time, the Globe opted out of hotspot access to PressReader, meaning you could only access the Globe when connected directly to a library's public Internet network, not remotely from your home (or elsewhere). Since then, perhaps due to significantly waning usage data, which indirectly impacts their ad rates and, ultimately, their ad revenue, they have rejoined PressReader Hotspot access.
Thus, it is now possible to directly link to an article on PressReader, but to do so correctly, you will need to:
Anyway, hope everyone finds this helpful, and please feel free to share this thread URL with people who refer people directly to the Globe's website. Peter, please feel free to link to this thread under the "Resources" page, or some similar part of this site where it would be most helpful. 🙂
Cheers,
Doug

Apologies, but I corrected my original link to:
https://www.removepaywall.com
You can just enter the URL for the article you wish to view. No cost that I can see.
It won't work for hard paywalls, but should be fine for soft paywalls, such as Globe and Mail.

The digital G&M runs specials quite often. My son gave me a years subscription for Christmas.I think it was less than 100$.Well worth it.Lots of articles worth reading.Just make sure you cancel the subscription before it runs out. Â
Yes, but that's a one-time, promotional subscription. I'm not sure if the Globe allows you to delete your account with linked e-mail address, meaning you would have to create multiple accounts with multiple e-mail addresses every year and, in so doing, may contravene their Terms of Service.
You all pay for your public library through, principally, your property taxes, so why not utilize the fabulous resource you get already?
Don't worry about trying to add to the Globe's revenue with your measly, token subscription; they are big boys and girls and can figure out their revenue/expense situation longer term.

Doug

Good point. For low cost Microsoft software licenses, there is an e-commerce site called GVGMall that many Microsoft Authorized Refurbishers use. They sell bulk licenses.
Personally, I have several Microsoft license keys and Microsoft really doesn't care about their Windows license revenue business given it is in long-term secular decline, but if I did, I would personally just not "activate Windows." The desktop watermark to do so is very unobtrusive and it's otherwise fully functional. If I did, though, I would use GVGMall. Better than buying what may be a non-functional license key from an unknown eBay seller.

The big difference is that work-around costs you nothing. If it works, it works and saves you from paying anything at all. If/when it fails to work, then you can always choose to throw away money.

I've found that MS News has many articles from the National Post and G&M. Just keep refreshing and you stand a good chance of seeing the item you wish to read.
For example, this is behind the paywall and I'm reading it now in MS News:
Adam Pankratz: Anti-road Guilbeault drives down the slippery slope to climate tyranny
The environment minister clearly wants Canada to deindustrialize

My understanding is that bypassing a paywall, such as by using the site Herman mentioned, is considered theft and thus illegal. I wouldn't want the cookies that may accompany its use.
Doug's suggestions seem sound and legal. It's possible they could be used on Facebook.
I love my public library! Tons of useful info online and in person.

Doug: Last time I looked, an unactivated Windows installation:
a: Stops working and locks up after 30 days unless you keep your system clock munged to an older time
b: keeps giving a nag pop-up unless you use an on-line hack to remove what used to be called (and may still be) "Windows Genuine Advantage"
Windows has at least 30 undocumented "Phone Home" addresses to keep track of you, and many don't show any hint of being Microsoft.
Linux just works, and it's free. And you can give copies to your friends, and even turn off statistics and error reporting if you're super-paranoid.

Renewals for G&M's digital subscription can be had for 50% off normal subscription price. No need to play games.
I have phoned in each year (for the past 2-3 years) about 3 days before the end of my subscription and obtained that 'deal' each time. Indeed, I just phoned in this morning to renew my current subscription ending this coming Wednesday. It goes up a tiny bit each year but at ~$15/week, I get plenty of value out of my G&M subscription. It is one of the few publications I am willing to support with a paid subscription.

There's a typo there. That should be $1.50/week.My last renewal was at $1.99/week. They have had promos that range from 99¢/week to $2.99/week. Â
I meant $15/month for 12 months. The real cheap promos don't appear to work for a full year and are not repeatable as an ongoing subscriber.

This may have been true in the past but you can download Windows 10 or Windows 11 from Microsoft's website, install it on your PC and continue to use it for as long as you like.
The main limitations/nuisances are that you will see an "activate windows" watermark on the bottom right of your monitor and you will not be able to customize your background image. There might be a few other minor limitations but you can continue to use it for free and get updates as usual.
My linux skills are not great but I have tried several linux distros and I like them a lot, especially Ubuntu. But it's not for everyone.
