I'd like to suggest configuring the forum software, if that functionality is available, to open links in posts, and even links throughout the site, in a new window, rather than in the existing window.

Since this site and Forum contain many valuable resources, when navigating to external links, if the link opens in the same window, the original location is lost, especially if there were subsequent links followed...unless you work your way back..back..back to the original page.

Tabbed browsers make it more practical to open links in new windows, and unwanted windows can subsequently be closed, but the original navigation page is still retained.

Thanks for the suggestion! Personally, I don't like that behavior on other sites, as I would like to choose whether or not I open a link in a new tab/window. But I'm interested to hear what others think.

Currently, there is a global setting for the forum. I wish there was a setting per user.

Most browsers have a feature where if you hold down the Ctrl key (or Cmd on Mac) while clicking on a link, it will force the "new tab" (or new window) behaviour. You can also usually Ctrl-click (or perhaps right-click) on the link and the context menu will have a "open in new tab" option. Check your browser docs for details.

Thanks Peter! I don't have experience with Simple Press, as I use vBulletin for the Forums I administer. Usually the setting for browser operation for new windows is a global setting and is not usually user customizable.

Of course, the user option is to just hold down the Control key when clicking on a link to open in a new window.

I appreciate the information available here!

I'm indifferent to this, because as @NorthernRaven points out, it's easy to manipulate the system on your own.

I'm used to right clicking and opening links in a new tab on this site. Most sites seem adverse to have you leave their site to check out a link elsewhere. If I had a choice, I would prefer if links automatically opened a new tab, especially if the link takes you off site. Sometimes, I continue on links in the new tab to go elsewhere, but I always come back to this forum and the last post I was on when I'm done surfing. Especially when there are posts farther down the forum I haven't read yet or have other posts to check. Kind of keeps the original tab you started from as a base to work from as I move around the forum and check links. Not a big deal either way, just the way everyone is used to smurfing the weeb. Easier to just close the latest tab and be immediately on the post you left off on.

I am used to right clicking a link to get either 'New tab' or 'New Window" as I choose since I always want to do that anyway (and not lose my current view/tab/position). While automatically going to a new Tab would be more convenient, I am generally indifferent to how Peter wants to handle this.

For now I'm favouring "leave as is" but I certainly welcome any further opinions 🙂
