From Doug: “With respect, Peter, you did not specifically address why my post was deleted and not JenE's, Loonie's, and other posts that mocked Chuck and his use of CAPS LOCK? My post was just trying to apologize for my own misunderstanding and the shortcomings of JenE, Loonie, and others...I see nothing wrong with that......”
I object in the strongest possible terms to Doug’s assertion that I mocked Chuck, and I believe that neither did Loonie. Indeed, we both defended Chuck, and I for one have, in the past, replied to his posts in capitals to better enable him to read my replies. Doug has gone too far in his suggestion. I have ignored his past barbs towards me as unworthy of response, but this latest smear cannot go unchallenged.

Apparently you can change your display name... I never knew that. When I first created my name back in 2008 I used SG but I was Shawguy on RFD and other forums... Now I'm Shawguy here too. Lol
I still don't see the problem with changing our "login name" as well, though. As others have said (Steve or Kidd, I think), people get to "know" a certain writing style. I could probably pick out Loonie's writing style easily if he or she decided to change his or her login name.
Plus, we've got IP addresses, which, usually, don't change materially very often (people usually stick with ISPs for at least a couple years and usually longer).
I am "dmehus" on RFD and reddit/PersonalFinanceCanada

Doug

Doug, no one you have named was mocking Chuck. You seem to have misinterpreted something somehow, which can sometimes happen.
I never saw what you wrote, but, to the extent that it may have reflected a misinterpretation, I can imagine why Peter may have felt it inappropriate.
Appreciate Shawguy's explanation.
I'd still like to hear Peter's definition of "abuse" of display name changes.

Loonie, i am NOT trying to be an instigator but i will honestly say... i do not read everyone's posts and 90% of the time i do not remember who said what. There are only a select few (you and Norman are among them), that i read and mostly respect what you have to say.
Please just let this topic go.... and besides it has nothing to do with game of thrones.

I don't understand why you think I should "let it go".
I'm not being difficult, just asking a simple question that I'd like to know the answer to, but it seems it cannot be answered.
I ask because I don't know, and I have difficulty imagining why people would want to change their name.
If I don't know, how will I know when to report a problem or whether I should waste my time even thinking about it?
I reported the most recent issue weeks if not months ago but there was no response. Now, with another complaint, it finally got dealt with. Perhaps you can understand my frustration, and why I would like an answer, better now.
However, you can rest assured that I'm not going to ask again.

A few things...
- The original topic of this thread has been lost and we should probably split off the posts into several threads. I take responsibility for my part in contributing to this thread going off the rails;
- To JenE and Loonie, I was most certainly never trying to start a smear campaign, despite JenE's assertion above. I never said JenE or Loonie intended to mock Chuck for his use of CAPS LOCK. Whether JenE and/or Loonie were trying to be helpful in their replies to Chuck by replying in ALL CAPS, that may well be, but the fact is that Chuck, others, and I took it to be mocking. I apologized for my own misunderstanding of Chuck's tremors and visual disability due, in part, to an earlier brain injury, and was just trying to point out that - intended or unintended - their posts caused Chuck's feelings to be hurt. I actually thought I might receive replies of thanks from JenE and Loonie for apologizing on their behalf. Nevertheless, now that that's been addressed, I do hope there's no hard feelings;
- This is more to Loonie since he or she is wondering on the rationale for login name changes, which is a valid discussion, but like I say, we should split those posts off into a new thread in the "Site suggestions" forum, I think. Loonie, there's a perfectly good reason for wanting to change one's login name: it's what we use to login with. Changing one's display name is fine, too, and I think this should not be limited. I agree with Peter in the sense that I do not think we need a formal policy on what constitutes display name and/or login name abuse. I think Peter should address repeat login name and display name changes on a case-by-case basis, privately, with the pertinent party. It's not something that needs a formal rule or "bylaw," I think;
- Peter referenced someone being banned...I hope it wasn't Chuck, as he didn't do anything wrong, and if that's the case, I'd urge him to be unbanned. I think this forum owes Chuck an apology, even if he was a bit impatient in worrying about Hubert not answering the phone.
Cheers,
Doug

No, it was not Chuck who was banned. Neither did Chuck indicate that he was in any way displeased with anyone's comments. If you re-read the thread, you will see this. I can't tell you who was banned as that person had at least 3 names, and the name was changed twice in that thread, but you will see it there.
I think this discussion should come to an end.
