I may have brought this up before, but there doesn't seem to be any place on this site to easily see which FIs are actually offering the best rates, in particular if they are regional institutions. My case in point is Tandia Credit Union in Ontario, whose 5 year GIC rate, @ 4.50%, is currently well above those on the charts listed herein. There should be a way, other than ultimately being buried in Forum comments, to keep these rates visible while they are still relevant. I know it's not technically a "special" or a "Promo", but maybe it should be treated as such. Don't forget, many of us are seniors and as the saying goes, "out of sight, out of mind." Just saying.

Count me in, please. I am also looking forward to the day, when I can easily see which FI is actually offering the best rates. Thank you.

I suspect including more CUs would be a challenge for the site operator, but I would love to see more as well. And it would also be good to see 3, 6 and 9 months.

Love this idea.

And for all of the people here who keep whining about how this suggestion or that suggestion "puts a burden on administration" -- seriously? What do you think this is? Yes, accessing this website is free. But so are about 10 billion other websites. Stop imposing your mediocre library club mentality on this place.

How long do you wish the list to be? 200 credit unions? Top 100 by assets? Top 50? Only those that accept members from all residents (i.e. not exclusive to certain groups) of at least one province?

IOW, what is the criteria to be used? Who is going to monitor the filters?

I know. Not as simple as it sounds. But there are some CUs out there that consistently offer smokin' rates. I think maybe handpicking the consistent winners, maybe ten or so, would be enough. And perhaps only those that are available broadly across the country...for example, most Manitoba CUs. Ideas only.

What is a smokin' rate? HISA only? GICs only? Tandia has been mentioned, obviously from a GIC rate perspective but other than their current 5 year rate, they don't rate higher than the "regulars". I note they currently have a smokin' HISA rate of about 0.05-0.4% which really fits well with the name of this site.

First of all, it appears that this site monitored at least daily. So, putting an update for a high rate in, say, the Promo section would not be labor intensive. I am not suggesting the creation of a new chart, as some of you have alluded to. I just feel that excellent rates, not included in the charts, should not get buried in the Forum.

Sounds reasonable and doable to me, gicjunkie. If you hadn’t put the information in a new topic it would have been easy to miss. I’m a Tandia client but hadn’t seen these new rates. Did you get an email?

No, I have not received an email. I just happened to spot the rate on the CANNEX website a while back. Knowing that Tandia has on occasion tried to best the market, I do check their website as well . Some organizations seem to be a bit lax in keeping customers in the loop.

This is not really very difficult. We all know what a noteworthy rate looks like, and there are only a handful at any give time.

AltaRed, you have objected every solitary time anyone has wanted to include anything that is not relevant to where you live - and this is even though you say you don't even buy GICs. This is quite unreasonable. It's time to drop the "Western alienation" rant and recognize the rest of the country.

This is Peter's site. It's up to him to sort out the time vs reward ratio, and it's up to us to tell him what we'd like to see.

Stop treating this site like some neighborhood voluntary project. Yes, we are all grateful to Peter for providing this space and service. But who are any of you to jump in with "oH nO itS tOo mUcH wOrK fOr pEtEr!!!!".

Peter is intelligent. He is interested in making this site better. Let HIM decide to run with something or not. Not a bunch of cantankerous hall monitors.

I think GICJunkie's suggestion pointed directly to the biggest, lingering weakness of this site.

While I'm here, I'd like to thank GICJunkie, JenE, Dentgal and one or two others for their ongoing efforts to bring these lesser-knowing offers/promotions to light. PLEASE keep it up.

And Loonie is right. This "Western Alienation" thing is getting tiring -- it's like when you have a hammer in your hand, everything looks like a nail. Nobody gives two ***** around here about western inclusion or western alienation. We want to know what's available with HISAs and GICs. If it's only available to folks in one province: more power to them. Geez.

For a free site, I am more than grateful. If other "free" site offers more, anyone can jump ship. But hey this is the one of the "free" site that offers a lot of free info. I am perfectly fine with scanning for "hidden" "not so obvious" clues to spot something special. I was trained that one should work to get what they want. Not expect spoon feed.

I am sure Peter accepts donation as a start. 🙂

Oh please. This site generates revenue from advertising. It may not be in the millions, but treating it like some kind of soup kitchen is disingenuous. Everyone is benefitting from this site -- including Peter in non-financial and financial ways. Walking on eggshells when making suggestions is the reason this site -- for all of its features -- FAR less than what it could be.

It's not about this specific (and incredibly good) suggestion from GICJunkie. It's the whole culture of this place.

And yes, here is where you tell me "I can leave if I want" -- and here is where I tell you that Peter or his power hungry voluntary minions can ban me anytime they want. I get it. Groupthink is appealing.

The OP originally wanted only the "best rates", then moved to "excellent rates". Would need working definition of the latter to do, I guess. But either way, isn't this info already available via Cannex, can't you just check it whenever you want?

And not sure how saying Peter can kick me off is an answer to why someone who doesn't like the culture here comes here in the first place - ?
