If some users are able to have the "archived discussion forums" removed from the so-called "main list," can we please finally remove some of the long outdated and expired savings promos from the "expired promotions" portion of the "promos" page? There is little, if any, benefit from an SEO perspective to linking to such discussion threads that are several years old. They are long since well-indexed by all search engines - and will stay that way! Moreover, Google's link-based algorithm, PageRank, carries much less "weight" today than it did 19 years ago when Google was started in a rental house. It simply has a myriad of algorithms today, too many to list or even know about. Also, in terms of patron or visitor relevance, there is little, if any, relevance or convenience to linking to a thread that talks about an Oaken Financial 0.25% bonus on GICs booked to Dec. 2014 or DUCA Credit Union's 3.25% net new money promo from the same time period. sf-cool

Therefore, I am both proposing and urging that there be a defined time limit on expired promos listing on that page and that should it be, quite simply:

  • that for promotions to be considered as "current promotions," while they may have started in the preceding calendar year, they must remain active in the current calendar year; and,
  • that all "expired promotions" shall have an end date in either of the immediate preceding calendar year or the current calendar year

Essentially, two years worth of "expired promotions". So basically, anything that ended prior to January 2017 would be deleted, unless such promotion. Feel free to use such verbiage, if you wish, in any footnote(s) at the bottom of the promo(s) page, similar to the verbiage adopted for the "inclusion criteria" in the comparison chart. sf-cool 🙂

Cheers,
Doug

In general, agreed. I can't imagine needing to access any promo older than two years less a day at the longest. As the site grows, we are developing clutter. Good time for housecleaning.

Also, as was mentioned in another thread, the search function doesn't work very well at all. I largely gave up on it quite a while ago. Is there some other way to do it?

Yes, that list of expired promos can be pruned. At the least, I can move them to another page. There's no SEO motivation behind it. It's just useful to look up a history of promos, but they don't all have to be on 1 page.

As for search, there are currently 2 -- the Google one at the very top (which is supposed to apply to the entire site, including articles), and then the forum-specific one. Are there some specific search scenarios that are bad with one or both of those search functions?

My problem has been with the forum-specific search function. I can't give you specifics any more. Will try the other one in future perhaps.

That makes sense. Forum-specific search engines are notoriously bad, the best one I've found is phpBB. I'm not even sure where the forum-specific one is here. I would characterize the Google Custom Search one as "pretty good". 🙂

I can potentially see a relevance to historical "net new money" promo rates in the sense of tracking whether they are going up or down but, perhaps if you do create a separate Expired Promotions page, instead of linking to specific forum threads (of which I see no rationale for linking to/promoting), perhaps a table/chart that is sortable by FI/type of promotion would be better? It'd probably be best to have as two (2) tables, a "new member/customer free money promos" one and a "net new money promo" one that charts the history of such historical promos. Any other special promos could probably just go by the wayside. 🙂

Doug

Thanks! I've moved them to "Expired promotions".
