I have only opened a Savings Account - HISA with Simplii Financial.

I have NO checking account or any other account with Simplii - don't need one.

Why did I receive a bank card & a PIN in mail for just a Savings - HISA account ?

What use is the PIN ? Its not like I can withdraw or deposit money/check into a HISA account from the CIBC ATM ?

Any idea what the bank card & PIN for a HISA is for ? Where & how do I use it ?

So tomorrow if I decide to open a Checking account with Simplii , will this same bank card & PIN which they have sent for HISA be used for the checking account ? Or do they mail another bank card & PIN for the checking account ?

Really confused why Simplii sent me a PIN & bank card just for a HISA

Not sure what all this excitement is about - it's not an account card, it's your bank card - don't you need the bank card number to sign-in online?

Nothing big deal about Simplii's HISA account according to this link - it's an account just like any other account - use any CIBC ATM.

Other than the intro offer it can hardly be classified as big deal HISA bank account with the regular rate being 1.00%.

At the CIBC ATM, one can't withdraw from the Simplii HISA. But, one can deposit cheques and check the balance.

Can't withdraw? Are you sure, that would be unique in the industry. I think you can subject to daily limits....or is that only for people who also have chequing accounts?

Yes, I'm certain. It has been like that since the PC Financial days.

I checked last night. At the CIBC ATM, my Simplii HISA is not among the accounts I can choose when I try to withdraw. The HISA is among the accounts I can choose when I try to deposit.

It would be odd for Simplii Financial to penalize clients who have both their chequing and savings accounts by no longer allowing them to do ATM withdrawals from their savings account.

I think Tangerine Bank and Alterna Bank are the same. ATM withdrawals and Interac debits can only be done from their chequing accounts. Tangerine Bank and Alterna Bank won't send out a banking card if one has just their savings accounts.

From the Simplii FAQs

What bank machines can I use to access money in my account?

You have free use of CIBC bank machines across Canada. Please note that withdrawals from savings accounts cannot be made at a bank machine (funds must first be transferred to another account) and some machines are not capable of accepting deposits.

Wow, thanks, live and learn! With CIBC chequing and savings accounts, you can deposit to and withdraw from either kind of account via that same ABM machine. Leave it to Simplii, a CIBC arm, to make things unsimple... Just like not paying their 'promotional interest' monthly.

Just FYI, my TD accounts are not really so different, depending on specifically which accounts you have. In my case, I can withdraw at ATM from either account. However, chequing account withdrawals at ATM are free, but savings accont withdrawals have a fee. So I have a sticky attached to my card to remind me to always move the money first to chequing (which is a free transaction) before making an ATM withdrawal.

So, just to summarize and figure the best way to work with Simplii's system, and make sure I get this. No surprises when end of February gets near, if you know what I mean. 😉

If the OP with only a savings account wants to make deposits, it can happen by setting up an external chequing account link and transferring in that way, or going to the ATM (most of them) and depositing a cheque. Getting money out can't happen directly at an ATM but can happen via the external link, I believe, ie; direct from savings to external chequing account? They told me yes, with no fee and no dollar limit, however if over $ 50k I have to phone in. How fast can this kind of transfer happen?

Another way, which I'm thinking of doing, is for the OP who now has a bank card and access to the ATM, to call in and add a chequing account which gives free cheques and no fees I believe. Then transfer from savings to chequing online at Simplii (does that happen immediately or same day?), and write a cheque, depositing that to the external chequing account. And on to another bank in the usual way. Also ATM access to cash via the chequing account subject to daily limits.

Am I missing anything?

My experience with PC or Simplii is you can do a number of separate $50K online bank-to-bank transfers at one time, didn't have to call in.

Took many weeks for mine to arrive, have them issue a replacement via courier (free).

I have not received my Simplii bank card yet either.

There's no hurry. The PC Financial bank card continues to work. I used it in a CIBC ATM a few days ago. sf-smile

The replacement Simplii bank cards will be sent out over the coming months, until March 2018.
