I don't blame you for leaving. They are behaving very badly, and being
unconscionably cheap.
Suggest you write a letter to the RBC ombudsman, even if you do move out.

They are incredibly cheap and while they have marketing people drumming up business their operations people drive them away. They insisted I break my mortgage and then they would happily give me a new one. (long story)
waive the break fee and i will sign a longer term mortgage is what i suggested. they would make way more in interest. nope. ok, well why wouldnt i go elsewhere if i pay the fee? they were unconcerned.

all i ask is benign indifference from a bank, RBC couldn't meet that standard.

Pipersierra, if it's any consolation to you, thanks for sharing your experience, because you've likely saved me a lot of future grief.

As it happens I'm in the process of reviewing and reorganizing my financial affairs in a major way for the purpose of concentrating things to make them more manageable, and expanding my currently limited relationship with Royal Bank was on the list of possibilities. However, your story has now given me sufficient pause that I won't be doing that.

Quite frankly I would flip out if any bank reneged on a promise that had been made to me by one of its own agents. When I worked in finance, if an employee made that kind of mistake, there was never any doubt that you would absolutely make the customer whole. Any cost would be charged to the company error account, and then you'd be sure to have a chat with the offending employee to prevent it from reoccurring.

But to disavow full responsibility for a promise to a customer that the bank even acknowledges? Wow. I guess honour no longer exists in retail banking.

RBC issues aside, I am absolutely amazed that this CSR was able to locate the previous conversation and listen to it within an hour!
I am thinking of Bell Canada and the numerous conversations I have had with them where they promise such and such a rate, a rate which never exactly appears on my bills, and any savings achieved do not last a year even when promised to do so. Even though I write down the time and name of person spoken to, Bell could care less. When I call back to try to actually get the deal I agreed to, they are dismissive and it is quite beyond them to retrieve the call - and this is not a bank, it's a TELEPHONE company! Hello?

Today's technology (particularly if you have mobile phone) allows you to record every phone conversation. Free apps, paid apps (few $), everything works flawlessly.
If THEY can say 'this will be recorded for whatever purposes' as soon as you get connected you just say 'This will be recorded' and continue to talk why you called... Because they can play stupid and say 'we did not record THAT conversation'...

I'm not knowledgeable about these marvellous modern inventions and don't have a smartphone.
However, it was very clear that Bell couldn't have cared less if I'd played back the entire conversation to them every time I called.

Not to railroad this conversation, but I have nothing but disgust for RBC. I purchased my truck on a payment plan. In order to leave my money gaining interest. 0% on 60k over 8 years.... Well it doesn't take a genius to count those beans quickly. Of course Chrysler used RBC.

My payments are set for the 1st of every month, an entire year went by, 1st of every month.... Thanks. December hit. Dec 29th.

Well as I am sure many of you do, you take payments from online accounts that charge nothing for fees. For me it was tangerine. I leave it in my savings and schedule the transfer the day before, than check it on payment day. Easy right.... Wrong.

RBC did refund me the nsf charge for my tangerine account, took approx 8 weeks. Than I checked my credit score.... Boop lost 18 points.... Why? RBC

Of course I got on the horn right away with trans and Equifax to make a claim, aw well contacted RBC.

RBCs last words with me, we're I'll send an email to some department and get back to you.

3 weeks later I got a call from Equifax and the problem had been resolved, my credit was bumped back to 843. As for RBC, it's been 2 months now, and I never heard anything back.

FYI credit karma is my go-to ever quarter now.

I went into the local RBC recently. I stood waiting for what seemed like an hour. The teller couldn't help me so I waited again to see someone further up the chain of command. She was not much help and would pass along my query to another who never did contact me.

Not much interest and barely polite were what I received from the help. Thank goodness for credit unions.

How is it that the RBC can bleed 1 billion dollars out of the economy every 30 days?
