I've been 2 days shy of a month trying to open an account. Last communication was everything was hunky dory and instructions for setting up my account would arrive soon. That was 10 days ago. Today I decided to phone. Main number is silent and the 1800 number is busy all the time. No answering machine no nothing.
I'm a patient guy and I understand busy and staffing issues but this does not bode well for future interactions.

Odd. I've called them five times in the last week and only one of those calls wasn't answered in less than ten minutes. That call went to a recording offering to call me back, and they did before long.

Keep in mind that all financial institutions tend to be busier at month-end. That's when I call for interest numbers (typically 2-3 weeks before statements arrive) and the delays relative to calls after the first week of the month are consistent.

Apparently their phones were down yesterday but I was able to get through today. They did answer my email inquiry as well.
The rep was not forthcoming with explanations but did admit, when pressed, that they've been very busy. Still no account.

I'm too far away for a visit dentgal.

Hmm... I changed renewal instructions on an upcoming expiring GIC 2 weeks ago in 10 minutes including phone wait time.

This exact same "transaction" at Tangerine took a total of TWO AND A HALF HOURS!

So my opinion is not to walk away and see what happens if you don't do any more follow up work. There are much worse out there! sf-frown

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to hang in there for a bit especially after hearing dougjp's adventure with tangerine.
They did get my account setup and it looks ok. It's the lack of communication that ticked me off.
Guess there is not another Hubert.

Try to simply change the term vs. the existing one. And then try to maintain a joint GIC upon renewal, when the HISA where the funds came from and go to, is in the same joint names.

You can do everything online (i.e. you can't change the term of an existing non-redeemable GIC nor can you "renew" the same fixed-term GIC, that's a contract, but once it matures and is deposited to your savings account you can just buy another one of any term) but you're right, dougjp, once you've bought the new GIC it seems you do have to call them to make it joint. That's a pain, if the wait time is long and they don't offer a call back option. I've had some success calling during the night, especially on weekends if they're there (which Tangerine is), with various institutions, while everybody's sleeping. Their site shows a current phone wait time of 10 minutes, I wonder how accurate that is.

I don't follow you, maybe its a typo 2nd word ('can' should have been 'can't'?). And you can renew a GIC online ONLY if its the same term as last time, choosing to just renew principal and have interest put in the HISA, or renew P&I (their wording for that is seriously vague and needs fixing, but its one of the inferred choices provided). I have no idea if Tangerine assigns a different GIC number to the new one or not, and I can only guess if the renewal remains in joint names.

I'll be writing to Tangerine. With this morning's "2nd step" of adding my wife to a GIC, and also fixing something their system screwed up and double created a GIC sf-surprised , I'm up over 3 hours wasted with Tangerine 🙁

Anyway, I realized we are hijacking this thread which is about Peoples Trust. Apologies for that.

I agree their maturity options are limited, as you say. But you can pick pay out (interest and principal) to my savings account on maturity day and then just buy a new one online that same day with those funds for whatever term, etc you want, i.e. don't "renew", just buy a new one. But you still have to call in after the fact to make it joint, and it seems like you're saying their posted wait time is not very accurate. Good luck.

Has anyone been able to take a broker rate to a credit union and see if they will match?

I've told Servus CU that I was moving my money for a GIC and the rate and they said that they could not match it. Of course, they try to sell me on the benefit of profit-sharing and ownership, but I declined.

A credit union that wants to maintain its relationship with the broker will say No…

However maybe worth a try to try to get ‘close’
