Peoples Trust 1 year GIC reaches 4.70%. I'm locking in if/when any reach or come close to 5.00%. Getting 4.25% with an esavings account with CIBC. GL

Now it's at 4.80% ... not sure it is going to get to 5.00% - but it is the best in the market right now..

Thanks for the heads up. Able to up my rate from 4.6 to 4.8 without losing accrued interest and kept original start date.
Their customer service is second to none when it comes to rate protection. I am at day11 and manager allowed new rates even tho cutoff is 10 days which is already very generous in my mind.

SMO, it's my turn to thank you for the foresight to pursue this. I decided to give it a try with my Sep 14 GIC purchase. Guess I am not the sweet talker you are sf-kiss - I only managed an increase to 4.7%. Still, I am pleased with the extra $52.37 this GIC will earn (darn, it could have been $105 sf-confused). I agree with you that People's has good service and , as it stands now, I will take out another GIC in Oct. with them. Next step will be to add a People's Bank account to extend my CDIC coverage.

Again, thanks for the tip.

Unable to reach a Peoples agent for the last 3 business days by phone or by email. No return calls and no email reply. Service is definitely lower level compared to the FIs I deal with.
For those who do deal with Peoples, do any of you know if Peoples offers monthly interest on their One Year GICs? If so, would you know the interest rate? Presumably it is lower than the 4.8% for annual pay interest.

Don't know about monthly pay but the number 1.855.683.2881 has worked well for me last few days, relatively short time on hold.
Curiously their phone message says their offices are closed, still due to virus - ?

I was calling to get them to lift the hold on funds transferred in so I could buy a GIC now, which they did.

Some FIs were closed Friday for Truth and Reconciliation Day. I don't know if Peoples was one of them. I think it was voluntary but not sure.

No success Monday nor today (Tuesday). Waited 25 min while the background music etc. played - left messages for call back, sent emails to both People’s Bank and Trust. Never got call back nor email response. Maybe tomorrow? Glad it is not an urgent query.

Peoples was indeed an organization that was closed for the holiday - saw a social posting saying they would be.

I see.
So they may have a backlog of calls to respond to from people who did not expect them to be closed Friday.
As far as I can make out, they have a very small staff. It seems I always get the same guy whenever I call but I haven't called for a while. He's always helpful though.

PT/PB have had their bricks-and-mortar offices open by appointment only since COVID-19 hit. They do usually answer the phone in a reasonable time. (<15 minutes)

Truth and Reconciliation Day (September 30) was a holiday for certain federally regulated workplaces. It wasn't a holiday for many provincially regulated workplaces.

It was a regular trading day for the Toronto Stock Exchange. But, trades that would normally settle on Friday, September 30 had to be settled Monday, October 3 because the federally regulated banks and Payments Canada were not open on September 30.

For information if anyone is interested, Peoples does not offer monthly interest option on their GICs - annual interest only.

I was also told by Peoples Trust that monthly interest on GICs is not possible. However, RetirED reported here on another thread, on August 19, 2022, having purchased GICs from Peoples Trust and Peoples Bank with monthly interest.
Would RetirED please inform us who at Peoples authorized monthly interest and if any special circumstances were involved.

I went by the head office 3 weeks ago - they are open [without appointment] at 888 Dunsmuir in Vancouver

Martster: I visited the Dunsmuir offices of PT/PB in the second week of August (don't want to make it easy to identify me from details here) and the door was still locked. I had to knock on it a minute or two, even with an appointment, before being admitted.

Just now, I phoned their line and the recording has changed; the "by appointment only" qualification is indeed gone. I think I last heard it more recently than three weeks ago, but have no way of checking.

GR: I've been with PT for over a decade, and while I'm willing to search back records that's a LOT to go through. Could you point me to the other thread so I can try to zero in on the records?

Please refer to your posting in "GIC Discussions" in the thread "GIC Monthly Interest Payout", posting #4 dated August 19, 2022. You stated that you purchased GICs in August 2022 from Peoples with monthly interest. Please elaborate. Thanks.
"Peoples Trust (and Peoples Bank) set up monthly-pay GICs for me last week."

If you're 57 and older, you can have the interest paid to you monthly if you want.
