I decided to double check my simpletax results with turbotax free online.
The end result was TT being over 1K higher. WTH!
Turbotax sucked so bad with nags to upgrade or buy. Because my medical expenses were higher, TT reported a possible CRA audit. But they reasured me that buying their support package everything would be rosey.
I'm thinking I must have missed something for such a large discrepancy but have yet to find it.

A few weeks ago, i posted a thread here dealing with what i thought to be a calculation error in a popular tax program. It was me. Doing the taxes by hand vs software, for the life of me, the numbers would not match.
Me, my eyes were seeing the numbers differently from paper to screen. i spent many, many, many minutes scratching my head. Boy did i have egg on my face. I made the assumption, the software was wrong when adding a column of numbers.

This conversation is one of the reasons I don't mind paying for TurboTax (CD included), to install it on home computer and do taxes for all members of my household.
If I have concerns on how my taxes were calculated, I can walk through each line of tax forms in TT that are filed for me, and double check.

You do realize there is a price to pay for free software, right? That "nagging" is that price.
They offer different support packages in paid version, too, but these offers can be dismissed easily. In the process of filing individual tax return offers to upgrade or get extra support came three times in total, each time I selected "Skip" or "Not interested" and that's it.

I'll go over the returns again with fresh eyes to see where I went wrong. I think I can use Studiotax as another check.
Simpletax is free or donation with no nags. Sure, they would like you to upgrade but they don't push it.
Turbotax is over the top and threat of an audit was a strong arm tactic. They will never see a dime from me.
I can do my return by hand and I did for many years but its nice having the software to do the heavy lifting.
I'll probably buy a Studiotax license and be done with it. As someone else mentioned, nothing is really "free".

I personally like Simpletax, used it from the time they started (about 8 years ago).
They provide outstanding support, answer questions very good.
I trust them, that they will not do anything bad with my data, if they actually never deletes returns off their servers.
I deleted my 2020 return from their web site immediately after sending to the CRA, but don't know if they actually keeping my copy on their servers.

I agree Winnie. Simpletax is very slick. Did my return with Studiotax and the results were identical with ST.
Studiotax is good but not as intuitive as ST.
I'm not too worried about my data on ST's server. Heck, the CRA was breached recently and everyone's data is there. There's a lot of our info residing on servers all over whether we like it or not.

I used to use the CD versions of CanTax, QuickTax & TurboTax dating back to the 1990s. This year TurboTax decided they didn't want their software installed on Windows 7. Since Windows 10 runs far slower than Windows 7 on older computers, rather than buy a new computer I used Wealthsimple Tax. The interview process wasn't as polished as previous TurboTax versions but all the questions were there in Wealthsimple Tax. The CRA download was excellent, including a capital loss carry-forward from 2019. CRA's My Account doesn't even give you that, you have to calculate it yourself from a cryptic chart. I made the optional payments for my 2 returns and it cost me 1/3 of what I used to pay for TurboTax.
