Today I upgraded my Studio Tax.

I used Auto Fill thinking that I could manually to the T slips that are not on CRA. And of course change the T5's to 50%. I could not find the Auto Fill slips so I just deleted the file and did it all manually. Auto Fill is a bad joke!! We pay dearly, yet the feds can't get it going.....it is tax season!!!! And not to mention.....TFSA is far from up to date as well!!!

Never the less I did Netfile and received a message saying to click as a first time Netfiler because I said in the Wizard I was a first time Netfiler. While in Netfile I kept trying with out clicking the first time Netfiler and was able to send. But my spouses is stuck on that I said in the wizard "first time Netfiler".

So my question is does any one know where I would have said I was a first time Netfiler in the Wizard?Screen-Shot-2019-03-09-at-2.16.14-PM.pngScreen-Shot-2019-03-09-at-2.15.58-PM.pngScreen-Shot-2019-03-09-at-2.15.29-PM.pngScreen-Shot-2019-03-09-at-2.52.51-PM.png

I think it is the first screen, where it says "Check if this is your first return or" for the first choice.

But, you seem to have selected the third choice, "Otherwise, check to confirm …"

Maybe it is a UI bug. Try clicking on the the first choice "Check if this is your first return or" and then click on the the third choice, "Otherwise, check to confirm …" before proceeding.

Thanks!!!!!sf-kiss

I had re-run Wizard many many many many times. And every time I took the "Other wise..." option. I saved file, rebooted, and tried again and the first box was checked off as "First return" so I moved the dot to "Other wise...." and it took!!! And Netfile worked!!!!

Thanks so much!!

I don't think Studio Tax is that good this year...but I still like it!!! I have found over the years that some of the stuff you click in the Wizard becomes an error when you validate and you have to manually go to the page and correct it. And also when you save a file and go back to it as I just did when I rebooted the check marks for Elections Canada or other check marks were missing. Very very odd. But I still like!!!

lol... are there some worms in this version that can make changes????

I'm glad you were able to proceed and NETFILE your returns.

Haven't tried out this year's StudioTax 2018 yet. I have used the versions for Windows for many past years. The user interface is not the best and is quirky.

In past versions, I have seen cases where the numbers did not end up being what I expect. For some situations, StudioTax requires extra steps to know the correct amount. Sometimes, there is even a bug!

Earlier versions didn't always round when it should. So, I would find numbers off by 1¢ here and there. I remember once I updated a line and StudioTax did not recalculate the subsequent lines! sf-surprised I was able to get it recalculate eventually by bumping another line up by $1 and then bumping it back by $1.

I usually print my return first and go through it with a calculator before I transmit it by NETFILE.

I used to use Studiotax because it was free, but now prefer to just pay and use the Ufile version that you download and keep on your computer. I found it optimized income better between family members. It's probably not as easy to use as Turbotax but I'm used to it already. One year I compared Studiotax, Genutax, Simple Tax to Ufile and Ufile gave me the best refund.

Briguy.

I have used a few Turbo Tax and others but found once I switched to a Mac the files were no longer held on my Mac. I don’t like that so I moved to Studio Tax as it all resides on my Mac. I did compare the results of Turbo Tax on my PC vs Studio Tax on my Mac and this one only test proved that Studio Tax gave me a lower tax bill.

Are you using a MAC or PC with Ufile?

One needs to look carefully at the differing returns, especially the one with the lower tax bill, to see why they differ.

In thread H&R Block giving me 1K more Tax return than TurboTax, I mentioned a case where the return with the lower taxes was actually wrong.

Return with the lowest taxes or highest refund doesn't mean it is a correct one. Could be a typo in entering the numbers for that return. Could a bug in the software that produced the return.

According to Canadian Financial DIY blog entry CRA Comments on "Accuracy" of NETFILE Certified Web Tax Software, NETFILE certification just means Total Income (Line 150) is guaranteed to be correct. That's it.

It seems no one has mentioned Tax Freeway. It is available for Mac or PC. You purchase it every year and can use it for up to 20 returns ($14.95 Mac; $9.95 PC). (It resides on your computer.) It offers NetFile, Auto-Fill, Express NOA, ReFile and you can print your return if you desire. You can download it for free and try it out before you buy.

I can't compare it to any other tax software as I haven't used anything else. I am self employed (sole proprietorship) and it is all I have used for my own and my spouse's income tax since 2009.

I use Ufile on my Windows PC. There's a version you download , and a version you do online. I buy the 12 return version since I do my whole family's returns. I like that you can only buy the complete version with all the forms, only difference between 4 return and 12 returns, whereas with Turbotax there are free, basic, standard, premier, and home & business versions. I've read where people are in the middle of doing their return with turbotax, and have to pay extra to upgrade to a higher version to get the form they need.

I tried TaxFreeway too I think, and I found it more confusing to use than Ufile, although I imagine Ufile is a bit more confusing than Turbotax ( although I've never tried Turbotax ) .
