Hi,

I did not work for a few years and filed returns with no income. I only ever got some GST credits and the Ontario Trillium payment.

Can i go back and just list as income a few sales I did on Kijiji or ebay, like $100 to $200. Would I then get any money like a refund from the government for those years?

If you never paid any income taxes in those years you have none that can be refunded.

Welcome to the Club, JT4455 ❗ sf-smile

Please help us to understand . . .

You had no income for a few years, and so paid no income taxes for those years, but you're looking for a tax refund ?

What are we missing ?

If i can get other benefits or if selling stuff online counts as income, even if less than $200.

So u hoping by declaring some income that u pay absolutely zero tax, u want more benefits / handout from the govt ?!
I am happy to say Canada don’t work this way. My tax money should not be spent by the govt In such a foolish fashion.

1- If you have no income your refunds is $0.00
2- If you are in Ontario and you paid rent or property tax in Ontario you will receive the Ontario trillium benefit (OTB) every month
3- You will also receive the GST every 3 months
4- You will also receive the CIA climate action incentive every 3 months

However you must file your Income Tax in order to receive all the above

for everyone else in here including myself 🙁 we will only receive the CIA climate action incentive every 3 months $372/4 starting in July 15 ( CIA NOT income tested benefit)

I was just asking a question. Thanks to the people who replied in a polite manner.

Btw I once met a man in a coffee shop who told me all about his investments and properties he owned. He drew diagrams on the napkins explaining everything. It was so sad. There is so much more to life than money.

Reporting more income can only increase your tax liability, with the rare exception when one can justify a business loss with the income. (Not too often or CRA will declare the business a hobby or ineligible in some other way.)

In any case, casually selling small amounts of personal property without setting up to be at least a sole-proprietorship or self-employment isn't commonly considered income. Even if it is, only the gain on the property is income - sale price minus cost of property. And the BC Working Income Tax Benefit only applies to earned working income, which casual property sales are not.

Income level does not increase GST/HST/Climate tax credits, but CAN reduce them.

No tax paid, no tax refunded.

Higher income, always only lower or same for almost all benefits.

"we will only receive the CIA climate action incentive every 3 months $372/4 starting in July 15 ( CIA NOT income tested benefit)"

How is this $372/4 received every quarter? Is it by direct deposit to your bank account?

Thanks. That clarifies the issue. Back in the old days, we would simply claim the credit on our tax return. Wonder why the CRA changed the method of payment?

You did get polite answers, other than perhaps one response. You cannot get anything back (income tax refund) if you have not paid any income taxes along the way, i.e. taxes withheld at source.

Example: If you earn/realize $200 in income from online sales, but no income tax was withheld on that $200 and sent to Ottawa, you can't expect a refund of income tax that was not previously paid.

COIN, CRA didn't change the method of payment, it was our present gov't that changed it from a credit on the tax return to quarterly money from gov't because the latter way is more direct, visible to us, thus more votes.

No idea what all the sages have said but I do know that money has brought me, and continues to bring me, a LOT of happiness I'd not have had if I was struggling, I highly recommend getting lots. Clearly not the route to nirvana but pretty sweet if you don't let it mess your mind. That's my wisdom.

Perhaps someone can help me understand this related situation.

A friend of mine has just been approved by CRA for the Disability Tax Credit retroactive to 2016.
He has now received reassessment notices for these years. In most years he is going to get slightly less than $200 back (variable amounts), so they say. CRA did not explain its calculations. For one of those years, I think it was 2017, he was told he wouldn't get anything.

His returns are about the same every year as his income is only OAS, CPP and GIS. He is wondering if the money will actually arrive because it doesn't seem to make sense. He only applied because this year his income will go up and he will be liable for tax.

My friend never paid any income tax during those years, and these amounts would not equal the Disability Tax Credit anyway. I understand it to be a non-refundable tax credit.

Can anyone explain why he is getting this money back?

First you are right Disability Tax Credit non-refundable tax credit.

OAS and CPP are taxable so more then likely your friend did paid a bit tax (ie income OAS approximately $7000.00 and CPP approximately 6K to 8K) now with DTC kicks in and his tax liability is probably zero. it hard to say without the actual income. if your friend still have the notice of assessment for those years, look for line 435 or 43500 if that line is zero then no refunds and look for line 260 or 26000 if there is a amount over $13000.00-$14000.00 that mean he may have paid tax

Agree, there must be more to the story as DTC is non-refundable credit so tax must have been payable. With basic personal plus senior credits amounts you're at around $20K before you might have to pay any tax, did OAS & CPP amounts exceed those credits (unlikely but possible, I guess) resulting in tax payable in those years aside from 2017? I have tax withheld at source from my OAS & CPP, which I then claim back on my return every year, but I believe most people don't.

Or else CRA messed up (Notice of Reassessment will have some rudimentary info re lines that were adjusted due to retro DTC amounts), but if they say you're getting money I believe the Notice usually tells you when and how you'll get it.

edit post 36 After reading Bill post

look for line 260 or 26000 if there is a amount over $20000.00-$21000.00 that mean he may have paid tax

in post 36 i use the amount for under 65 since your friend is receiving OAS then he gets extra credit of 7k
