I think a small fish like me is at little risk of being hacked. The bigger fish that I deal with like banks/credit unions/credit bureaus/hospitals etc. are my real risk.
Family member visited some website and somehow got PC infected with the virus that Microsoft Defender can't remove. It will alert on virus, attempt to clean the PC, reboots it, but after reboot everything repeats again.
It's been years ago, but sharing this story to show that not just "big fish" gets hit.

Do a system restore back to when the computer was "clean" (i.e. not infected).

A couple of questions for the members.1) What tax software are you using? I've been using StudioTax for years.
2) What ant-virus are you using? I've been using AVAST for years.
TurboTax desktop Standard version for 10+ years. Despite what TurboTax recommends, you DON'T need to use their Premier version for reporting investment income etc. Standard version has been working just fine for me and several friends with investments of all kinds.
Used to use Avast but it started taking up significant resources. Now just use Windows Defender and scan with free Malwarebytes from time to time.

I have found that to be the case with almost all brands of virus software. They eventually kill the functionality of a PC and I stopped using any of them years ago.... Windows Defender and the free version of Malwarebytes works just fine. I used the premium version of Malwarebytes for a year or so but it bogged down the PC as well. If these companies cannot design proper software, they don't deserve to be used.

Though I don't run a Windows or Apple computer, I have used Malwarebytes-free when helping others for years. It's my go-to resource for viral infections, but ALWAYS research the identified virus on line before doing anything. Find out whether removal is possible or restoration/recreation is necessary. Some infections require several steps and verifications.
