This is based on doing everything online, does not apply to in person account opening.

1) Filled in application online, quick and easy, no hiccups, maybe 5mins max

comment: they did not send any email to acknowledge the application. However after 2 hours and once they have a real person that actually picks up the account opening request, I receive a email acknowledged the request and ask for legal documents for ID verification etc.

2) IDs are uploaded via their secure chat, send a message

comment: it only allow 1 attachment per message. Since I need to submit 3 pieces of info (including void cheque for linking FIs), have to send 3 separate messages via the secure chat. You can fund the $5 membership fee AFTER FI is linked

3) It takes a full 5 biz days for them to send the micro deposit to the linked FIs. I then have to phone in to confirm the micro deposit amount and "finalize" the account opening

comment: once that is done, takes about half a day for them to work on it, and then recd a email re my account number and log in instructions and how to fund the account.

4) Once log in, you still have to go "manage transfer" to complete the FI linking, the info is there but you have to verify it again by inputting the micro deposit amount.

Overall comment:
The process is a little slow, but I have to say their customer service and response time on both live chat and email have been excellent. I had to contact them a couple of times as some of their processes is a bit weird (to me). Every time I got a response within 10mins (even for email) and thats is top notch. It makes Tangerine looks like a 3rd world operation by comparison.

Also for those getting a GIC, all you do is "open a GIC account" online, pick the term u wantm u dont have to specify amount. You can fund it within 2 days. All it does is it adds the account for you, which you can then do your FI transfer to that GIC account directly. Rep explained to me this is better cuz if you transfer to ur savings acct first, the funds will be on hold for 6 days and you can not use it to buy GIC during the holding period. Also if a better rate pops up AFTER you "open the GIC account", just leave it unfunded and they will automatically cancel it for you. Thats is the best process I have seen out of all FI's GIC purchase process.

Hope this helps those who are looking to open a new account. I am quite impressed as their web and app looks better than a lot of other FIs, think LBC lol

It's been about 3 years since we became members and I don't recall the details but It sure sounds like a slower process nowadays.

Glad to hear you're happy with the end result...

I also recently started accounts at Hubert and can attest to their friendliness and responsiveness. I had a couple of hiccups during registration, but they were acceptable. They rejected one of my forms of identification and asked for a copy of my driver's license. I refused and satisfied them with something else.

There is one thing to mention about their platform and creating links to other financial institutions. When I make a link from Hubert to another FI, they always call to confirm authenticity. They say it is a security measure, but it might be annoying if you do many of them often. I can avoid it by sending a message every time to tell them that it was indeed me doing it, but it seems overly bothersome. No other FI has this verification mechanism for their linkages.

I just went partially through their account opening process and decided to quit after their repeated requests for very intrusive personal information. I submitted an application (a lot of personal info including SIN) a void check, a copy of my drivers license, and a utility bill in my name. After all that, they proceeded to request a lot of personal info on my employer (I am retired), and a copy of my CRA statement. This was much more than I was prepared to give, and it felt more like an online rectal exam, and so I requested they delete the application and destroy all the info they had already gathered.

I was hesitant for the same reasons. I did not send my driver's licence, but did send a recent utility bill and an old copy of a bill payment for CRA. They were both rejected and Hubert demanded my driver's licence and a CRA statement. The utility bill was rejected because it was not in my name and the CRA bill payment was (suspectedly) too old (2007).

I refused to send my DL and sent a copy of a shareholder statement from SunLife with my home address. I also sent a more recent letter from CRA regarding my GST credit (or some such) and they were both accepted.

I agree with you. They have no need of my latest assessment or return. I also refuse to send my image or DL. I was accepted as a customer without further hassle.

It is likely that Hubert was not able to confirm identity using the credit bureau file method. Hubert then had to fall back to the government-issued photo ID method or dual-process method.

All that is required by FINTRAC.

Agreed. I have come across other FIs or CUs that request drivers license as proof, pretty common. As long as you are sending it via a secure platform, there is no issue. Same goes for the CRA assessment to prove your SIN#. As more banking goes digital and online, its time to get comfortable.

The only problem I had with Hubert was trying to find the link to confirm my account for the micro deposit.

I had to hunt for about 5 minutes to find it.

Here is the link you can click to take you directly to the part pf the website where you can confirm you have received the micro deposit.

https://online.happysavings.ca/SettingsExternalAccounts/ExternalAccountsSettings

Note you have to be logged in to use that link

I don't recall having a problem for that confirmation. But glad to hear you're all set.

It used to be more obvious in the older Hubert site.

In the new site, the journey is

  • ≡ (hamburger)
  • Settings
  • Accounts
  • External Accounts

Having just read through this thread I gotta say my 'Open Account' experience last week was definitely "Happier" than many who posted comments.

Actually, it was TWO Accounts, as the plan was to have everything be Joint with my wife, and her as Primary. So I did her's first, and within an hour had received the acknowledgement email with instructions of next steps ...namely proof of id and Void cheque for linking to our main FI.

At this point I did call them ... a 'real person' always answers immediately ... as I did not wish to send CRA Notice of Assessment level info, and utility bills were in my name. So they said driver's license, is fine, so I simply created one pdf file with DL and Void Cheque, and uploaded it through their secure 'Contact Us' portal.

That was the Wed.... and by mid dayThurs. the micro deposit appeared in our linked FI account, so less than 24hrs later. We called to confirm the amount, and shortly thereafter emails with temp p/w and Membership number arrived.
Went through the Change PW routine, Logged In, and immediately transferred the $10 for our Membership Shares.

At this point I initiated my 'Open Account' request, and was able to select 'Make Joint with Existing Member' and avoid filling out a secondary form. Everything same as above, but micro deposit did take one additional business day to show up. No biggie.

At this point I've transferred funds that were earning zero in our main FI checking A/C, and following the 10-20-30-40 method to maximize flexibility to built 1yr 2% GICs [aka Term Deposts]. Btw, I loved that a simple phone call request was all it took for them to take the usual 'hold' off, and I could create the GICs immediately and start earning 2.0% vs 1.25 HISA rate.

They seem to be very security conscious, 2-step verification is mandatory upon Account Setup, which is fine by me. They give you multiple choices, but I always use the SMS text to mobile phone method. You do have the option for the system to 'remember' you device, eg. desktop pc, and avoid having to receive and enter a one time code when using that particular device.

I'm not a fan of receiving an email every time we log in to an account ... crazy amount of those during this setup and GIC purchase period. However there is no way to discontinue this type of message vs Notifications you do want eg. Security related or Rate increases. "Even for Us" the CSR told me. 😉

So our experience has been good so far, and nice to finally have found an FI where we can earn 2% in a cashable GIC, which will allow me to run chequing account down to a bare minimum working amount, without concern.
That translates into "HAPPY SAVINGS". [I guess I'm a convert].
