Membership may be higher @ the credit unions in Manitoba but I would think client deposits and the big bucks are with the banks.
I don't have that data but the article Norman linked to earlier (https://www.cucm.org/press/manitoba-credit-unions-celebrate-milestones-in-growth-and-member-service) talks of $40B in MB CU assets which isn't bad for a population of 1.4M ...
ON CU's have about $80B in assets for a population of almost 15M ...

Why would you think that?
The big banks abandoned tons of people in MB over the years and are still doing it. The internet covers a number of articles about branch closures, and I remember this being a crisis even several decades ago.
Why would you need a big bank if you get better service from your CU? When people feel they've been mistreated, their memories are long.
I recommend attending Steinbach CU's AGM to get a better feel for the significance of CUs in MB. You didn't have to be a member to sign in for it online this year. I closed my account there for a number of reasons but they are still growing.

I am told that
- younger Manitobans prefer to deal with banks instead of CUs because the banks have MUCH better online and mobile banking technology (this may not be a desirable issue for you, but the younger ones sure want that)
- banks have more branches and ATMs which can be an advantage for many (young and not young)
- the banks offer a more comprehensive range of banking products
Perhaps older Manitobans abandoned the banks and moved to CUs at one point - the new generation do not necessarily have the same feelings now with the generational change.
You closed your account with Steinbach, so obviously Steinbach was not meeting your needs. Neither banks nor CUs can satisfy everyone.
While I like Hubert service and one year Term, their website and mobile are mediocre. Most people are not like you and me who are only interested in best interest rates and the one year Term cashable quarterly - and thus deal with Hubert. I wonder if things will change for Hubert once the amalgamation progresses to more standard policies/products etc.
