Please everyone new to HSBC note that on the webpage, where one is being asked to set up preferences for the Direct Savings Account e-statements vs. paper statements; as well as e-notifications vs. paper notifications are being offered as alternatives. Nowhere does this page say or highlight the the fact, THAT YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR PAPER STATEMENTS/NOTIFICATIONS.
They dinged us for $3.50 for one statement. Called twice the Call centre for reversal, nothing cooking. I suppose the world's largest bank did not become that by being charitable.

I have an account at a bricks and mortar branch and I've never been nailed for a fee for my direct savings account.
That being said, I'm on a fee waiver with them as a condition of HSBC getting my business so this may not be a normal business practice.
Try calling the premier number - even if you're not premier they seem to have a little more authority than the regular customer service line (the no hold times is always a plus too)

I've been a customer at Achieva Financial for just going on a year, as I like their competitively high savings account and term deposit rates most other FIs will never match without any of the hassle of negotiating. Ohh ya...they deposit $1.00 a month into my account (they pay me) for receiving my account statement online.
