You may want to consider a gic that is offered by northern credit union. They have a 1 yr offering at 2.25%. You can keep it there for year 2 for 2% or take out on anniversary date.

https://www.northerncu.com/personal/rates/gic-rates-arent-high-enough/
If you click on the Application, you get the following info:
"Available January 9th, 2017 until March 31, 2017.
If the member chooses, he/she can transfer their funds into another investment or redeem their investment following the first or second year without any penalties. This can be done within a 7-day window of the anniversary date of the initial deposit.
Available for both new and existing funds.
Earn 2.25% for the first 12 months if you deposit new money before March 31, 2017."

I was unable to determine whether they were open to people who don't live in northern Ontario or in Ontario.

At Northern Credit union you do not need to be from Northern Ontario to be part of the credit union. Also with our website you can do the investing yourself instead of coming into the branch. We also have lots of good investment specials going on all the time. When one ends there is usually always one coming up.

Its a great place to invest.

It's 2019 & their 3-year Market Linked GIC caught my eyes sf-cool min 3.5%, max unlimited

. . . comparing with 3-yr GIC leader on our chart, worth digging deeper if I got the cash

sf-embarassed Oops, my bad. It is market linked, probably 3.5% for whole term. ... Not comparable.

I started the online application and this 3 year doesn’t appear as an option so i looked up my nearest branch. Open Tuesdays and Fridays. If i ever decide to make the trip i hope to remember to bring a couple of extra full gasoline cans in case the locals are only open on Mondays and Thursdays.

I call and this is indeed a per annum rate and not per term rate.

This is a really good return, all the upside and non the downside of equity.

And I called them and they told me it is 3.5% over 3 years, not 3.5% per year. It works out to 1.17% per year.

When I looked at this I felt it had to be 3.5% guaranteed for the whole term, not annually.

Again, if it looks too good to be true........

sf-embarassed Oops, my bad. I can't find more written details on their website. Since it is market linked, probably 3.5% for whole term ... from previous experience elsewhere.
