Edit by admin: The offer (not the forum member) was determined to be a scam

Hello people,

I was doing GIC research and stumbled onto a website offering the following
3 year at 3.5%
5 year at 4.15%

I sent a request and received a phone call from them . Basically they work through UBS.

Is this too good to be true? Or a scam?

BigZim.

A "copy" "paste" of the website you mention in your post would help us out, a lot.

Whenever i stumble, i bruise like a ripe banana.

I'm pretty sure we had a similar post a month or so ago about the same thing.

Seems suspicious to me.

It is likely too good to be true.

Site TLS certificate is a Class 1 certificate that has no verification of business identity. One has no confirmation of who is behind the site.

It is not a trust company. At the bottom of the page, there is this fine print:

Disclaimer: Gictrust.ca is a marketing website which does not provide financial advice. We pass the data provided by you on the online forms to relevant third parties who will contact you in relation to fixed rate bond investments and advice on relevant products and we accept no liability and make no guarantees in this regard. We are not authorised or regulated by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). Reliance on the promotion for the purpose of engaging in any investment activity may expose an individual to a significant risk of losing all of the investment. Investments and the income from them may go down as well as up and you may get back less than the amount you invested. As with all investments, capital is at risk. There are no fees for using this service. GIC Trust is a trading name of London Choice Investments SL, a company incorporated in Spain with its registered office at Avenida Juan Sanchis Candela 23, Alicante 03015.

A company in Spain harvesting your info to pass on who knows who.

Address is "125-720 King Street West, Suite 2000, Toronto M5V 3S5". Sounds like they have the entire 20th floor of the building!

But, Google Maps Street View of the building only shows a 10-floor building.

"125 - 720 King Street West" is actually the address of The UPS Store #287 in Unit 125 of the building. That "Suite 2000" is likely not a suite but a mailbox or a mail forwarding drop of the store.

Also, what kind of five year bonds would pay 4.15% per annum these days? Starts with letter "J". sf-laugh

Just a wild guess by me. Sounds like a private lender that lends to sub-sub-prime borrowers. j = junk?

According to the UK Financial Conduct Authority regulator, the company tried something similar there in 2020: Investment Finder/Income Finder trading name of London Choice Investments.

The address "3rd Floor, 86-90 Paul Street, LONDON, EC2A 4NE" is that of virtual office provider Hoxton Mix. Wouldn't you like an London, UK address for £15.00 + tax per month?

Yes, J = Junk. I don't think it is even a lender. It looks like an unregulated finder who collects finders' fees for introducing people with money to people who need money.

The original poster there never get back to us. Wonder if he took the red pill & gone down the rabbit hole? Or may be he is trying to warn us about a red pill.

Based on the rates posted, they are 100% not a GIC even if the rate is legit.
Or I should say they label it as a "GIC" but it aint really a GIC...

I would not even waste my time to investigate.

Looks like a scam to me.

Why would an UBS Canada banker be receiving UBS Canada business e-mail via a strange ubs-eng.com e-mail address? I would expect he would have a ubs.com or ubs.ca e-mail address.

That weird ubs-eng.com domain was registered through a Hong Kong domain registrar to someone in Haiti!

Country Code HT stands for Haiti.
The rates advertised, if they exist at all, are probably not in Cdn dollars.

The "eng" could conceivably stand for "English" as the UBS site allows French also.
