As of today ,
CIBC Bonus rate GIC for 5 years is now 4.50 %...

Term Rate3
1 year 3.50%
1.5 year 3.70%
2 year 4.00%
3 year 4.10%
4 year 4.20%
5 year 4.50%

I am betting rates for 5 years will exceed 5 % soon !

Is this a down trend for long term GIC's ?

Is this a down trend for long term GIC's ?  

If and when Canada goes into recession, interest rates will likely stabilize quite quickly and even decrease for certain terms. I am not of the opinion that GIC rates are going to charge upwards significantly at this point. GIC rates have gone flat for terms from 1 to 5 years.

Some other FIs are starting to reduce their GIC rates, as well. For another example, check out where EQ Bank's GIC rates have gone recently.

Are these rate reductions signaling a Trend, or are they just Hiccups ❓

My guess ... it's the beginning of a Trend.

Time to 'Govern Ourselves Accordingly'.
