Checked my account this morning to find the Government of Canada deposited almost $200 into my account. I have no idea why. Checked our CRA and Service Canada accounts and nothing shows any payments made this month. There was supposed to be a GST rebate Oct 5, but both our accounts say we aren't eligible. Last time it showed up in July and 2 months later they sent a letter informing me it was a GST rebate. Anyone know what they are paying out for in November? Didn't apply for CERB, not on EI.

According to CRA: Child & Family Benefits - Benefit payment dates, today is the day for the monthly Ontario Trillium Benefit payments.

If in BC, maybe the following?
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/income-taxes/personal/credits/climate-action

"The payments made in July 2020, October 2020, January 2021 and April 2021 are based on your adjusted family net income for the 2019 tax year."

Pretty sure that is paid quarterly, as I got mine October 5th.

Edit: my meaning being, it is known on your accounts and scheduled payments and Rick didn’t see this amount in his list.

Thanx LK...didn't even know that existed. Unfortunately, our combined income was over the threshold to qualify.

Could it be anything to do with CPP?
If you are collecting CPP, but were still contributing in the last year or so, they will, at some point, recalculate your pension based on your most recent tax return (contributions). It could add up to that much over the 10 months so far this year.
Someone I know started getting CPP in April, sent in their tax return in June, and as of end of October had not yet rec'd the adjustment for 2019 contributions.

It might be worth going over your income tax return carefully to see if there is something you could get that you forgot about.

Hmmm....good point. I did do some work before it got shut down with the schools in March. Think I made a total of about 400 bux but all in 2020 so no effect on 2019 taxes. I did my taxes this year then took it all to an accountant who did find some stuff I missed. I'm having a feeling it's the GST rebate. Guess I'll see when the send me an explanation in a month or two.

On the other hand, don't spend it all at once! The gov't's computer may rescind it if was a wrong decision. I saw that happen once where it arrived one day and disappeared the next when their computer got some additional info. It was a legitimate decision, but no letter came.

Yes....had that issue years ago when I was on EI for a while. They just took back what they said they overpaid me.

Did you authorize them to withdraw money from your account???? I believe provided account for EI is for deposits only? What if you did NOT have funds on your account? Who would be paying NSF fine?
At least, I hope, they did not fine you for overpay...

This is something I've warned people about, and why I keep a separate account (a no-fee-for-me at BlueShore) just for direct payments. I scoot them out ASAP, too. I've been told by several payors that there are no one-way PAD/PAW links - if you allow deposits, withdrawals can come too.

It's kind of scary. And a huge nuisance to have to move the money every time. But I can see your point.

My goal is to NOT have to make those transfers so that, if we were incapacitated, they would keep rolling in and the bills would continue to be paid from them and there would be no delay while POAs got organized. The system could run on its own for quite a while with auto deposits and auto payments. I think I'll continue to chance it as there is some slush there anyway.

Pre-authorized debits requires a agreement to be in place. Direct deposits do not.

Providing a payor the info to do direct deposits does not automatically give permission for the payor to do pre-authorized debits!

A direct deposit payor can do a correction within 3 business days. The understanding I have is that correction is subject to the recipient's acceptance. If the recipient objects, then the bank will bounce the correction.

If its a electronic error, then yes the bank can reverse the transaction. Just like you do a manual deposit of $100 but type in $1k at the ATM machine. But it is not like the government can pay you, then just take it away after 1 month for whatever reason. They can only send u request to return the money, just like what they do with CERB wrongful payment. They can not withdraw from your linked deposit account without your consent. If they can, they will just "withdraw" the tax one owes every year....

No...they just deducted it from my next cheque. Created a bit of a hardship as I recall. Hardly living high on the hog when unemployed and broke.

Reason I kept my CC chequing account....for those situations. Money is out the day it gets put in. Can't take it back if it's gone.

Got a letter today. Wife's CPP adjustment for contributions made while still working. Backdated.
Mystery solved.
Thanx for all the suggestions!

That's great, Rick. At least you know they won't be clawing it back, and always nice to get a bit more. I think I was on the right track then, #7 above.

Can I ask when you guys submitted your taxes this year? I ask because spouse is awaiting a similar boost and I'd like to know if it is likely to come this year. We submitted in June and paid the CPP contribution for 2019 in June via the taxes (for self-employed).
If your wife was salaried, that might make a difference as it would have been submitted from the T4 at the beginning of the year.

Good call Loonie! Yes, she's salaried. She owed this year....paid it on line Aug 26... just before the deadline in September.

Thanks, Rick!
So, something is amiss at our end.
It may well be because of the self-employment, which delays the contribution.
Assuming your wife's T4 went in in about February, that means you waited about 8-9 months for the adjustment. At that rate, ours may not come until the new year, so I won't hold my breath!
It's good to know that an explanatory letter comes with it.
