I pay Rogers, taken off my $100 annual topup, a $5/month add-on for 250 texts, which is about 200 more than I need, so the per text amount is irrelevant for me. And I never use it for voice calls. But I'll check out Speakout, thanks.
We have been using SpeakOut for years. Thanks Peter, for the other forum created for that environment. https://www.speakoutwireless.ca/. Lots of good information there.
We have limited need for mobile phones - basically used as emergency phone or very short conversations. There is a reasonable 911 charge each month but any surplus time is carried over. $28.25 /year incl. tax works for me. YMMV.

savemoresaveoften: Freedom Mobile is a tiny joke, with a terrible system, noisy calls and poor coverage. At roughly 5% of the market, it's not a significant competitor in the market. It was purchased just to finish putting Wind (its former name) out of business. Wind was under-capitalized and sold off by Canwest-Global before it was even approved to go into operation (as Globalive).
Bill et al: I'm surprised to hear many people complain about being pressured to go from pay-as-you-go to monthly plans! I was pressured for a decade to go to pay-as-you-go, because Telus wanted to stop paying for billing and payment costs. They kept cutting services and limits on my Smalltalk plans until I gave up and went to PAYG, which lets them get my money earlier and with less administrative costs. And they know I now have to keep an extra balance in my account if I ever want to do a long-distance call or from the USA.
Bill: Pay-as-you-go remains popular for the same reason debit purchase is so much more common than credit cards in Canada - because people with crappy credit or cut off from telcoms because of outstanding debt have no other choice. It won't go away.
mustang: I only know one person using the 7-11 plan, and he's happy as a clam with it. He annoyingly pushes it to all his friends, as he does with his vegetarianism, electric car and high-income wife to pay for it all. 🙂
As I won't give up my wired phone, my $15 monthly Telus pre-pay is a better deal for me. And I can still use my dumbphone, which 7-11 won't allow (it's 3G).
EDIT: I just looked over the new "Unofficial Speakout Page." All those per-usage fees, particularly for text, would never be worth my while. Too many friends addicted to texting. And my Telus prepay plan allows 100 no-charge minutes a month AND no-charge evening/weekend calls.
I NEVER call anything "free" if one has to pay for it. There are no "Free" minutes - those are COMPULSORY minutes! Same for cable TV channels, and extra add-ons with things or services one buys.
