I was grocery shopping this evening at Superstore (owned by Loblaw). They have a price matching policy. The policy has recently been changed to exclude FreshCo (owned by Sobey) from price matching. They still accept No Frills (owned by Loblaw and generally in the same price and merchandise range as No Frills).
Sounds to me like another arm of the strategy embodied in the credit card wars. We were reminded in the WalMart story that No frills is one of the stores that doesn't take Visa. So, now, Loblaw is closing the net on price matching as well, taking measures that they hope encourage us to price match within the Loblaw family. There isn't much meaningful competition other than FreshCo most of the time.
I haven't checked to see if No Frills is still price matching with FreshCo.
