Sadiq has a vested agenda with BMO Asset Management. A 60/40 portfolio is doing very well, thank you very much. Well above inflation on a one year basis to Dec 10th (10.74%) https://www.morningstar.ca/ca/report/etf/performance.aspx?t=0P0001CLVR For those more conservatively inclined, even 40/60 has not done that poorly (6.09%) on a 1 year basis to Dec 10th. https://www.morningstar.ca/ca/report/etf/performance.aspx?t=0P0001CLVQ

Also decent numbers on a 3 year basis which is all that can be posted on those examples given their inception dates of ~Jan 2018.

None of us should ever expect a 100% portfolio of GICs and HISAs to beat inflation on a long term rolling average basis. Only when interest rates have to be jacked up to tame inflation. They still won't beat inflation even after 4-6 rate increases speculated by the market in 2022 but it will be close at least on a BT basis.

Its simple:
Inflation is risk, HISA and GICs are risk free. A risk free product will never beat risk. Otherwise who needs to take risk...
