About 10 years. No, you cannot be sure that new item will not fail after a week or two... That is why all those recalls (car) are appearing after 'a while'. Buying used you do not know what somebody did with it before. Thus only used stuff I buy is stuff at garage sales with no need for external energy to function.
And that was just an excuse to get new, better unit. We are not discussing used vs. new here. I can sell you my 14 years old car and you will be driving it until you die, it is that good and reliable. But it does not have all new toys, radars, lasers, machine-guns and it does not float not flies. And since I am 5 years old, I like toys thus I want new car.

Each to their own but my gas stove is about 50 years old and works fine. I had it checked out by licensed gas tech a few years back. As they all have to be installed by such a person, you should know if any new purchase is faulty, used or otherwise.
It's always an option to buy new with bells and whistles.
