Your future financial health in danger; for those who do not know yet...

Not really.
It was Statistics Canada trying a more accurate way to collect data on how much each Canadian spends in each category than having people fill out surveys. This was previously discussed in these threads:
Statistics Canada requesting banking information of Canadians without their knowledge
Statistics Canada suspends credit searches, delays plan to obtain banking records
The data was to make statistics like the Consumer Price Index better reflect actual spending.
Name, birth date, and SIN would be needed to link a person's transactions from different financial institutions together.

I'm not going to comment on the merit of this story but I am concerned about heightened government control and policies overall.
Our democratic system seems more like communism as time goes on. Why do our elected officials push their own agendas while the population helplessly looks on? Because they can.
The major flaw of any government is loss of control by the governed. Ever wonder why we don't get to vote on major decisions like abortion, assisted dying, immigration, carbon tax, gun control, and foreign funding?
Democracy is simply a smoke screen for authoritarianism. We need a major overhaul of how government works in this country to be truly democratic but those in power will never allow it.

mmit, I agree we are headed for communism (eventually) though I disagree it's not the people's will. For some time now over 60% voters regularly vote for centre to centre-left parties, for "big government" parties. Listen to conversation around you and you will note it's axiomatic that "big business" is evil and needs to be chased elsewhere. Also people regularly demand gov't control/regulation in the free market (car insurance, telecom bills, credit card interest rates are just some examples). People increasingly reject buying from international conglomerates in favour of supporting local, small (small, apparently, is good - you hear it on here regularly about the "big banks" compared to smaller credit unions/online banks) businesses, even when prices are not competitive. I could go on, but the point is that the move to socialism (communism-lite), to gov't control of an increasing proportion of the economy, seems to me to be the social consensus. Especially among the young. Democracy, i.e. the will of the majority, seems very much alive, from what I can tell.
Note also it's never been the case that Canadians have regular referenda on major issues (we get to vote thumbs up or down at election time), no changes there, so I wouldn't cite that as evidence of creeping authoritarianism.
