Edit by admin: this discussion came out of the thread about the Simplii Financial announcement
I expect that CIBC will add more ATMs to accommodate all the new customers. And they may close some branches.

I think that's highly doubtful given that many ATM users are oblivious to the higher Convenience Fees charged for withdrawals from ATMs not associated with THEIR financial institution - and the data from the CBA probably bears that out.
From the Canadian Bankers Association
There are over 65,000 bank machines in Canada and 18,711 of these are bank-owned ABMs
...when asked to name the way they conduct the majority of their financial transactions, 16 per cent reported that they use ABMs, 51 per cent report that they bank primarily online and 17% reported that they primarily bank using a mobile device.
As for needing cash - chain grocery stores will give you cash, on top of your purchase, through your debit card - can't count the number of times I've seen people getting $100 cash from Sobeys/Safeway.

Top It Up, my wife's been getting cash that way at the grocery stores for years now. I've started hardly using cash. I noticed the kids were using their debit or credit cards for their $1.71 gum purchases (by now maybe they're using their phones) at the nearby Metro and I thought, hey, I can be cool like that too, I guess the store doesn't mind, so now I tap my credit card for pretty much everything, no matter how small.
Do people find ATMs useful for transactions other than getting cash?

CIBC's branch and ATM locator is at CIBC Branches and ATMs.Perhaps, there is a nearby Petro Canada, Pioneer, or ONroute gas station with a CIBC ATM.
Thanks for the suggestion Norman, the nearby Petrocan is a madhouse and only has a cash dispenser, we need deposit as the particular Dr's office worked for is too cheap to setup direct deposit
( Why is it some Dr's are so cheap they skimp on staffing, salaries, and offer no benefits, even though their office has many Dr's sharing facilities and a very busy walk in, so they make money hand over fist, guess they need to pay for their expensive lifestyles, luxury cars, big houses, and expensive vacations - End Rant )
If the other half will co-operate, a combination of online cheque deposit may be workable, as they like to carry some cash in hand

Bill I'm with you, cash back cards for most things (no more points that devalue), and easy tracking of spending, I may have only $10 or $20 in my wallet before I get an infusion. Still it's good to have cash as on occasion there can be e-payment system issues where CC or Debit etc will not work.
Personally ATM's are cash machines only, rarely do I need to deposit, and If I do it's the phone app I use to save time and an unnecessary trip (or waiting in yet another line)

When the lights go out on all the ATMs, the electrical grid breaks (see journalist Ted Koppel's book on this subject) or whatever, cash will be very handy - and scarce. So will anything else you can barter.
I use credit cards wherever possible, for the cashback, but would never rely on them or any other electronic means, as my only way of doing business. As always,it's best to diversify.
There are also occasions where, for privacy reasons, one might not want to have one's expenditures recorded.
I will oppose all efforts to eliminate cash, one of the last vestiges of privacy. What I spend my money on is really nobody's business except my own if I choose to keep it that way. And it will be an essential tool in any widespread emergency.

Not much left to hide or leave to the imagination:
- my CC issuer has 45+ years of my spending history;
- my bank has 55+ years of my banking activity, including money transfer history, debit card purchases, worldwide cash withdrawals, and local cash withdrawals, and every city and country from where I sign in, online, to check my account
- governments know everything about me - my income, my investments, dental costs, optometry costs, prescription medicine costs, doctor visits, countries I travel to AND how long I'm travelling in those countries;
- both my ISP and Google know absolutely EVERY page I search for and hit on the internet - EVERY . SINGLE . PAGE;
- my ISP knows the address of every email I send and receive AND for those of you using a Google gmail account they take a moment to digitally scan and data mine every email passing through their system, that's a beauty;
- my cellphone and landline provider knows every call I make and every call I receive;
- Apple knows what movies I watch, what music I listen to, and what books I read, AS DOES my city's library;
- airlines and Aeroplan know everywhere I fly and just how much I'll pay for those services, while hotel chains know everything about my stays;
- however, the beautiful thing about using Apple Pay NOW, is that, while the bank still knows everything as described above - the merchant doesn't have a bloody clue who I am - so that's what I'm tapping with exclusively, these days.
- as for all those XXX videos, well, they are what they are 🙂

And because they know every move we've ever made, the pattern tells them what we're going to do. Last time I travelled (which I infrequently do) I phoned my credit card company to let them know and she said they no longer need me to call when I travel, their systems will know whether or not a purchase is legit. I said the first purchase I'm likely to make is gas somewhere in Ohio and she said that's fine, their computer will know it's me. My propane tank was running low so I asked her if it would last through the upcoming weekend family get-together BBQ (I'm too cheap to buy one of those gauges) but she just laughed.

That tedious list of privacy invasions, of which most of us must surely be aware, is why I still like cash. They don't know where it goes.
There are still lots of places where you can use it, and some where you must or should.
Use it or lose it. Use your cards wherever you want or must, but be smart about it.
There are ways to avoid many of these incursion if you are interested and think about it.
