I find XE.COM the best if you want lots of different currencies. If your looking for just US$, then XE.COM and Ally.ca is about the same. About 1.5 cents per dollar over the mid market rate. Ally holds the rate for 1 minute for US$ purchases. XE.com will hold it for 40 seconds after you become a member. Both are free to use. Theres a cost to you with paying XE.COM if your not with a bank who offers to pay them as a bill for free. I havent paid one penny yet to use XE.COM, I am with BMO with their Premium account and I added XE.COM as a bill.
I've now posted a review and walkthrough of XE Trade:

This is a great review of XE trade Peter. I have been using it for almost two years now. I always got my US$ in my BMO account one day after the trade though. I assume its because XE trade is a BMO customer as well. I found that out when I first signed up and asked for a draft in error instead of an EFT and when the draft arrived in the mail I noticed the banking info on the draft was BMO. Its just a guess why I get the US$ so fast, I am not 100% sure.

I found this site which shows xe.com reviews are quite varied (although I am not familiar with the review site itself):

It looks like there are some real problems with some folks getting signed up.
I also stumbled on Knightsbridge:

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has used (or tried to use) them and whether they thought the rates were competitive.
