Anyone have experience or suggestion? I want to send my granddaughter $50 USD for her Birthday. I can mail a US Bank Draft for the cost of postage and conversion CDN to USD. Or get a US Gift Card from The GAP or Target websites for effectively conversion on my Credit Card. But I want her to have more flexibility to be able to shop with Cash at any Store. Is there a better and faster way (like the Tangerine email money transfer but it is only good within Canada)? Thoughts appreciated.

I can't answer directly, but if there is a mall that your granddaughter favours, malls often sell gift cards that are valid at any store in the mall.

There's an interesting way to do this which is gaining popularity if you don't mind going through the initial hoops to set up the account. Companies like tranferwise is what I'm talking about. I only researched bank account to bank account transfers, but I'm sure there are other options.

From what I understand, these companies make all their profit off of a low exchange rate and small transaction fees in some cases. The business model is:

Canadian wants to transfer $50USD to granddaughter
American wants to transfer $50CAD to someone
Both use TransferWise by depositing the required amount from their bank to TransferWise as a payment
TransferWise then gives your granddaughter the americans $50 and the someone in Canada, your money.
Thus avoiding paying exchange and keeping that as profit along with a fee

Pretty cool idea that seems to be getting bigger.

I haven't done this yet, just researching it. I chose to mention TransferWise, because they seem reputable.

If you have a TD bank account and your grandchild has a Visa or Visa Debit in the US you can transfer online and it will show up in their account within a couple hours. I Believe it is $7.95 or $8.95 per transaction. The service is called Visa Direct and is accessible in TD online banking.
