NO OAS T4A
Hearing from a few others....no T4A for OAS after a death occurs. Can any one else confirm? And My Account is NOT accessible...so any idea of where to get a copy?

Surprise on CPP death benefit.
Tax software says to be claimed by the beneficiary and not the name on the T4A(P). There are 8 beneficiaries. Any comments on how to report this one would be welcome.

A bit more information on the status of the estate would be helpful such as:
- confirming date of death was in 2023 so that you are trying to complete the T1 Final Return? The T4A(OAS) should have been sent to the Legal Representative of the estate if CRA has previously been notified who the Legal Representative now is and be part of the Final T1 tax return.
- If this is a 'last to die' situation (no spouse), the death benefit should normally go into the Estate of X bank account and be part of the assets of the T3 Testamentary Trust, the proceeds of which will be able to be disbursed to beneficiaries upon completion of Grant of Probate. A T3 Trust filing normally is due end of March for the prior year (depending on year end selected for the trust which is often Dec 31st).

Service Canada administers OAS as well as CPP.

I would try a contact phone number in Cancel Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security benefits after a death to see if Service Canada would also accept requests for a T4A(OAS) slip through one of them.

CPP: Death benefit has more details. My reading of the page is that whoever actually received the death benefit reports it:

4. Who should complete the application

If an estate exists, the executor named in the will or the administrator named by the Court to administer the estate applies for the death benefit.

The executor should apply for the benefit within 60 days of the date of death.

If no estate exists or if the executor has not applied for the death benefit, payment may be made to other persons who apply for the benefit in the following order of priority:

  • the person or institution that has paid for or that is responsible for paying for the funeral expenses of the deceased
  • the surviving spouse or common-law partner of the deceased, or
  • the next-of-kin of the deceased

Thank you both. I gotta get to get aligned and on top of it!

We have a friend too whose husband passed last year. No T4A OAS either. Apparently Service Canada can print one.

Hey Hey!!! The number works. If you select "report a death" they WILL help.
They offered to get it in the mail and offered to let us know what the amount was on the slip. After waiting awhile for the amount the person advises what a slip was never generated. And also mentioned it should have arrived shortly after the death was reported a year ago. The person is trouble shooting as to why it was not generated.

Will advise of the phone call end result.

Person on phone arranged to have one mailed with in 30 days and gave us the full amount and the tax withhold.

Our friend in same situation went to service Canada and was given what you would download from your My Account at CRA.

Thank you. We found an accountant that will do a tax return and a trust return along with setting up a trust account with a trust number.
Will do today or tomorrow. Trust account numbers can now be acquired immediately online.

And yes we are late. And thank goodness that Studio Tax told me what we had to do when I entered the CPP death benefit. Other wise had no idea of our obligation. Past probate we did was much simpler and had no death benefit.

I was able to save a significant amount by researching the use of a GTE Trust "graduated rate estate”. But will expect a bit of a penalty for being a month late on filing.

Taxes on investment income using the GTE Trust was 20.6% (15% and 5.06%) Vs the normal of 45.29% (33% and 12.29%), and did not have the benefit of individual tax credits.

I suspect you mean a GRE (Graduated Rate Estate) trust.
