Personally I take this with a huge grain of salt, there are other indicators Canadians as a whole have money ready to spend. So if some are having trouble there are others who have extra dough thanks to restrictions of last 2 years so the latter will provide extra stimulus to the economy.

And the sponsor of the survey, MNP Ltd, is hardly a disinterested party, check out their business. And their surveys started in 2017, so "ever" ain't that big a deal. Per the article the report's fine print ends with "All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error." That last one would seem to cover a fair bit, indeed.

But I must admit my bias too, i.e. I'm (not always but usually) inclined to see the glass as half full, so maybe the sky really is falling this time.

The full press release from Ipsos is at MNP Debt Index Reaches Lowest Level Recorded, Weighed Down by Concerns over Omicron, Renewed Lockdowns, Rising Inflation.

Reality is not always reflected in how happy or optimistic people say they feel. Sky isn't falling and people actually have extra dough.

The December 2021 poll found 46% of Canadians are $200 or less away from not meeting their financial obligations. That's an improvement over the 52% in March 2017 and 53% in March 2021 from their earlier polls.

Maclean’s (February 13, 2006): Money Really Can Buy Happiness… is a good look at how studies asking people how happy they are have led to flawed conclusions about money and happiness.

As for these polls... are they in person? At your front door, in a shopping mall, OR is the poll taken over the phone, maybe a mailed out questionnaire?

What type of person answers a poll? To divulge financial information to a poll... is insane. "Yeah, i HAD money up until i told someone where i kept it."

Nanos research (in my opinion) should be charged with inciting hatred. Some of their polls are very divisive. The way they pit the vaxxed against the unvaxxed can only lead to trouble.

Totally agree. Polls have become a “tool” to nudge popular opinions in certain direction in order to advance policies of interest groups. One should use his own intelligence when evaluating opinion polls.

I have some fun doing the automated or email polls. I answer the demographic questions to indicate I'm a high school age female and then answer everything with right wing, ultra-conservative views. They probably cull me.
