CPP returns 0.6% in the second quarter. Tangerine paid me 0.75% in that same quarter... huh? Doesn't the Canadian government pay financial advisors (cppib) 100's of millions of dollars to manage this fund?

Globe article indicates it made over 11% last fiscal year, take you 4 years to do that with Tangerine.

Bill, that's water under the bridge. A few years ago, i had a full head of hair. Question... how many years in a few, 10? sf-frown

Last quarter a return of 0.6%
The quarter before that 1.8%

"The fund said it delivered a net-investment return of 0.6 per cent in the second quarter to the end of Sept. 30, down from 1.8 per cent in the previous quarter."

What is actually relevant is what the next sentence says.

The CPP Fund averaged 9.1% per annum for the past ten years, including that second quarter ending September 30. Over the past five years, the return was 12.1% per annum.

CPP invests very widely in all kinds of things, including many that you and I can't or won't touch. They can, and must, do this because they are so big.
There are always going to be some quarters where they are down - even some years. This is to be expected, but monitored.

These are their fiscal year net returns (ending March) for the past 10 years, from their 2018 annual report:

(18.8%) 14.7% 11.6% 6.3% 9.8% 16.1% 18.3% 3.4% 11.8% 11.6%
