Fair enough. I get that based on the view of most who frequent this forum. However, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and it depends on one's strategy......
I buy all* my GICs via discount brokerages, so in my case Equitable Bank (as compared to EQ Bank) compete with the highest 5 year offerings, currently about 2.47%, at my 2 discount brokerages. My 5 year GIC ladder provides me with portfolio stability. IOW, return OF capital versus return ON capital. I don't expect a 'real' after tax return on such capital.
* about 5-7% of my portfolio
P.S. I only bring this up in this specific post to provide an alternative perspective on reasons to have GICs in their portfolio.
