I received this email from EQ Bank on Nov. 28th:

.
Sorry for the delay. I don't live in Quebec, so it slipped my mind for a while (senior's moment sf-wink) .

Cheers,

    Dean

I read that differently. I read it literally as "These changes have been made to reflect the launch of EQ Bank in Quebec." It does not say that the launch has yet taken effect. There is a postal address for Equitable Bank in Montreal listed now but there has been no news release on the launch yet.

You're right ⏫ AltaRed.

I dug a little deeper and found that in spite of that email being sent out, this change is still 'a-work-in-progress'. However, it sounds like it's going to happen quite soon (~ January ?).

On the EQ Bank website I signed up to be automatically notified, the day it actually happens. Once I get that notice, I'll report back to Peter.

Until then . . .

Not all the products are made available in Quebec ... RSP Savings Account & US Dollar Account is missing

https://www.eqbank.ca/personal-banking/quebec

EQ Bank does not offer the following products in the province of Quebec: US Dollar Account, International Money Transfers, RSP Savings Accounts, and RSP GICs. Additionally, the EQ to EQ transfers feature is not available in Quebec.

Weird. From the same page, in the FAQ, at the bottom:

Are my deposits with EQ Bank covered by CDIC?
Yes—deposits made under EQ Bank and Equitable Bank are aggregately eligible for CDIC protection up to $100,000, per insured category, per depositor, as outlined in CDIC’s "Protecting Your Deposits". For example, you’re covered for up to $100,000 combined across your individual Savings Plus Account, GICs, US Dollar Account, and any deposits in your name that you have with Equitable Bank. Eligible deposits in your joint account are insured separately.

That is very likely due to their trust companies not having been registered and thus regulated yet by the provincial regulator, the Autorité des marchés financers (AMF). Equitable Trust is listed on their register, but likely only as a deposit-gathering institution, not yet a registered trust account administration corporation. Note that Concentra Trust and Bank of Nova Scotia Trust Company do not have that specific notation with respect to deposit gathering institutions. In short, it's coming. 🙂

Cheers,
Doug
