Something interesting happened to me recently...

Bought furniture, (furnishings, appliances, and décor category), put 50% downpayment, and got my 2% money-back as one of my categories. Furniture delivered yesterday, I paid my balance, (but to a slightly different business name on the receipt), and it came thru on my Tang. MasterCard (pending) as a different category. I cannot remember the category, but it wasn't even slightly related to furniture, appliances and décor.

I was able to change the category to the correct one, online (i.e. without the help of a CSR), and it appears I will get my 2% for my balance-owing payment.

So, this is a cautionary tale perhaps, to check and ensure you receive the proper money-back on all your 2% categories

(On perhaps a related note, I wrote a Tang cheque to myself, deposited in my PC Financial acct, before the snapshot date, and it was categorized 'Rent Paid'...which was incorrect!)

Check again in a few days when the charge actually posts.

That "transaction category" that one can change is not used to determine the money-back reward level. My understanding is the merchant category code (MCC) on the charge is used for that.

This statement, at the bottom of the panel to change the "transaction category", suggests that:

Changing the transaction category does not change the rewards categorization.

Change category take about month+ to become effective so people will not flip-flop as they are pleased. Thus you will not get 2% on your 50% balance you paid to who-knows-whom...

In Rewards section, above the Change Categories button, is displayed the 'as of' date. The change becomes effective on your statement date, but then the next 'as of' date is 3 months later.

Thinking of applying for Tangerine CC, wondering if there are any promo offers anyone is aware of for enrolling? Note: I am already a Tangerine customer/client.

Cheers!

There's a $40 bonus from Great Canadian Rebates.

Thank you for that Peter. I'm just curious if you (or anyone else) has used this or other rebates from GCR and how do you get paid? Is it a credit on their website to buy stuff from their website? Do they mail a cheque. I went on their site but it doesn't specify how one gets paid, only when to expect payment.

AMAZON GIFT CERTIFICATE payments are sent monthly if your account balance is $3.00. That includes rebates and referral bonuses. Signup Bonuses DO NOT COUNT towards the $3.00 minimum. If your current balance is below the minimum amount we'll carry over your Cash Back Rebate to the next month.

PAYPAL payments are sent monthly if your account balance is $5.00. That includes rebates and referral bonuses. Signup Bonuses DO NOT COUNT towards the $5.00 minimum. If your current balance is below the minimum amount we'll carry over your Cash Back Rebate to the next month.

CHEQUE payments are sent on a per request basis. We do this so members can choose when to go to the bank and cash their cheque. A member can let their balance accumulate to a super size cheque if they wish. The minimum balance required to request a cheque is $30.00. Signup Bonuses COUNT towards the $30.00 minimum.

I have used the cheque option twice before. I have not used the Amazon or PayPal options.
