We have pretty much same cards as Save2Retire and we use them same way.
One trick we usually do (cheating yes) we use the card that gives maximum rewards when we buy, but if we decide to return the item we try to use the card with lower rewards for refund. Some stores ask for same card we use to purchase the item, some don't.

The difficult part was to figure that nobody wants to deal with that specific smartphone after its original 1 year warranty.
AmEx extended warranty rep I contacted told me to get a repair estimate. I went to Staples where I bought smartphone, to find if they can refer me to authorized repair services for that smartphone. I left Staples with manufacturer's 1-800 number, that's all they can do for me manager at Staples said.
I emailed smartphone manufacturer support to ask for local authorized repair center I can contact. They told me to contact retailer I bought smartphone from.
So, that was dead end. I emailed AmEx warranty representative and explained situation: I can't provide repair estimate and here is why.
I have not received reply on my email to AmEx. I did not expect anything, but after one month of silence from AmEx I suddenly found an envelope in my mailbox with the check in it for the full price of smartphone.
Kudos to AmEx. Perhaps they discovered quickly enough that you would not be able to repair it.
Shame on Staples for selling crap.
thanks for the details.

Pretty damning statement WITHOUT knowing a single detail of or how it failed, of or how it was handled, of or whether it was new or refurbished.
Brand new smartphone. 1 year warranty. Handled gently.
About 1 year and 1 month after purchase smartphone started to freeze occasionally. It was intermittent while using different apps, email, browsing. Finally I was able to reproduce it 100% of time: when I tried to delete images taken by camera, I can delete all but few. Trying to delete those remaining always caused smartphone to freeze and restart was only recovery.
I concluded that internal memory started to fail. That would explain why issues were intermittent: attempt of an app to write to bad memory failed while writing to still good memory succeeded.
Manufacturer was willing to replace the phone under warranty, through retailer, but post-warranty - no service.
I do not want to name brand, but this is lesson learned: when buying smartphone, check for availability of post-warranty services or just be ready to dispose failed smartphone and buy new.

Be aware that, considering the earlier discussion with regard to extended warranty for a smartphone, that Rogers Mastercard extended warranty does not apply to cell phones or smart phones. In fact, there is not much about their extended benefits that are of benefit to me. However, they may fit your needs.
The 1.75%, no fee, card is the hook that got my attention.

YET you showed absolutely no compunction about outing Staples as the retailer - strange set of allegiances.
I keep shopping at Staples, just like before, I do like their stores and selection in them. Just because its single store manager thought I can't google 1-800 number of smartphone manufacturer, does not make retailer bad.
I no longer own smartphone of that brand I was loyal user of and do not plan to. Ever.
The model of smartphone I had problems with no longer sold in Canada and US.
In fact, the whole my story was about trust demonstrated by AmEx extended warranty department to AmEx cardholder. All they had is my word. I still keep that defective smartphone, they didn't ask me to ship it to AmEx, for example to verify that I do indeed have that smartphone and not sold it on eBay.
All what had happened is email conversation, after which AmEx sent me a check.
Of course, I will recommend AmEx after that, based on my experience. After all, this thread is about credit cards and how/where we use them, not about where one buys business supplies and consumer electronics.

Great discussions and points. Thanks everyone.
Regarding the Extended Warranty. It is not easy to use it. They make it very complicated and difficult to avoid paying. Yes I had to take the coffee maker to an authorized shop they told me about and also have the main warranty paper work etc.
Please note some credit cards don't give extended warranty to some categories. Rogers MC doesn't give this warranty to phones. So read those boring detailed.
Regarding TD and their Chequing. No thank you. I am not going to put $5000 there while I can at least 3% interest rate. I haven't paid a fee for Chequing account since I had my PC account many years ago and I still use the free cheques they gave me when I got the account. I actually have about 200 cheques (4 books) with old address. But they were all free and useful sometimes.
I am glad Home Trust didn't approve my application so I go and apply for Rogers and then Canadian Tire Elite MCs.
I honestly do like Rogers more. Becuase it is really simple to see all the details on the account. The customer service is excellent and I never have to wait more than couple minutes. Plus I get points back when using for foreign transactions.
Canadian Tire will be tested only when I have to use their Gold Roadside (Hopefully never).
MBNA - Is kind of my current oldest card (2013). For now, I might just keep it unless a new card with more perks and points etc comes aboard.

The Wal-Mart near me isn't a supercentre and isn't categorized as grocery for Tangerine.. 🙁
Walmart near me is supposedly to be 'supercentre' but it is not recognized as such by CIBC Dividend Platinum (4% on groceries/gas). Nevertheless it is recognized by Tangerine MC (2%).
Funny thing is that neither Walmart nor CIBC are able (or willing) to provide MCC code. Not even WM store manager (nor any other level of WM employee, not even those at customer support centre) is aware of what the heck is MCC and he promised to 'investigate'. I did hold a breath for a month or so but then gave up.

Selling phones is a significant part of Rogers' business, of course.
Good to know they stand behind what they sell...
