No, you can not switch credit cards that belong to different companies. Though what is stopping you from applying for the smart cash card to have in addition to your PC card?

Hi guys; I have a PC Master card that I don't use any more, and I just heard about Smart MBNA Master card with 5% cash back for the first 6 mts, etc. Can anyone tell me if I can switch my PC Master card for MBNA Smart Cash MAster Card? They're both 'MAster Card', but from other companies. Thanks;

I don't know, but for security reasons I don't want to hold more than 2-3 credit cards with me. I am using 1 or 2 of them regularly, anyway. Also,I feel uncomfortable calling them and cancelling cards. It's a long process that requires a lot of follow ups. Anyway, if I apply for mbna smart cash card I'll have to cancel my PC Master card and also my Scotia bank momentum visa (2%cash back + 1%cash back), which has annual fee. I'm thinking to wait till I get paid my annual cash back, than cancel it; and in the meantime I will probably apply for MBNA smart cash card. Do you think cancelling the Scotia bank momentum visa card will take a long time, considering it's annual fee?
Thanks;

I have switched over to MBNA SmartCash for about 6 months now. The ONLY thing I don't like is their telemarketing crap. I get calls monthly on my mobile with people trying to sell me extra protection insurance etc etc. I do not remember RBC or TD (well MBNA is part of TD now) hounding me on my mobile when I had their VISA.
Just a word of warning...

Also apart from calling the companies directly.. Add your numbers to the Gov do not call list.. Also I also use Michael Geist's tool to block all charities etc.. Works great! Haven't had calls in a few years unless they are clearly from orgs breaking the rules.. Just remember when u initiate business with some1 new you are giving them the ability to call unless u have yourself added to their DNC list immediately after signing up..

Hey again, I finally decided to keep my other CCs and not cancel any of them before I apply for MBNA smart cash CC. Can anyone tell me if I can purchase my yearly auto insurance (~$1400) with my new MBNA smart cash card, and will it bring me 5%back cash? Anyone having this experiance of paying his auto insurance with a MBNA smart cash card? Is it listed to get cash back? Is 'Superstore" also listed?
Thanks

Why would it take a long time? It's one phone call.

Sorry Simon, just sent you a reply in a wrong place -:)), so sorry about that. Anyhow, in my reply I wrote that I read somewhere that besides a phone call I need to write a letter to the CC company, in purpose to cancel my CC. Letters go slowly and it takes a long time to follow up with them and check if everything is ok with the cancellation. Anyhow, now I am clear what I am going to do with my CCs and when will apply for a new MBNA smart cash CC. I hope my auto insurance company will let me use my CC for my monthly payments this time, as they didn't in the past....Thanks a lot everyone for your advices..

I don't know where you read that. But I'm pretty sure it's wrong.
If your insurance company didn't accept credit card payment before, I don't understand why it would be different with another card.

Hi Max,
The official response from MBNA is no, you must increase your credit limit (which is very easily done online, or on the phone). If you explain the circumstances, they may opt to give you a temporary increase.
That said, they will allow you to carry a positive balance and deduct this for you as you use your card. But if for some reason you want to retrieve this money, it may take up to a month for them to send you the positive balance via cheque (depending on the amount), and you will not be able to use your card during this time.

Credit card rules sheets usually advise that, if you are going on an extended trip with an insufficient credit limit, you can make phone, internet or even mail payments from wherever you are. In my experience, they always accept advance payments as well.
I mean, why wouldn't they? They get to loan out your advance at 20+% until your charges come through on your next bill!
Getting money out of a card is as simple as using a card to buy stuff. Sometimes a friend will give you cash and let you use your card for them - people often do this to give someone a bonus advantage they won't get. You see it every day in restaurants - "Here, take my cash, put it on your card, you get points!"
HEY - here's a thought: if you wanted to get an excess credit balance out of a credit card, and took a cash advance, would they charge you interest on the cash they were already holding?

Hi, I just applied on line for the smart 5% cash back mbna master card. Do I need to get a call for approval? Also, it didn't say how much will be the credit limit? Will I be able to do on line banking and see my balance at any time? Can I see the points I have earned for cash back as well? Thanks;

Call MBNA after about 2-3 days after applying and you should be able to obtain an instant approval over the phone. They should also at that time tell you how much your credit limit is.
Once you have received your card, you can create an mbna.ca online account to view your balance and also see the rewards points you have earned.

I never had to call for approval. They approved my application and sent me a card within a few weeks. Just this month I reached the 5000 pts mark which I believe equates to $50 cash back, but I haven't received a payout cheque yet.
You don't "HAVE TO" call to obtain approval, but if you want to speed things along and find out how much your credit limit is, you can get this done by calling in 2-3 days after submitting your application.
MBNA says that $50 cheques are mailed 4-6 weeks following a statement. I usually receive mine about 3 weeks following the statement date.
