Thanks, Norman, for ferreting out the fine print.
Does anyone have any experience of actually getting the 4% on restaurants in other countries? Just wondering how universal the codes are.
…Someone who has used their Home Trust Visa card at a restaurant in another country can also check.
The merchant category code of Home Trust Visa card transactions is shown in the transaction details on the Home Trust Visa online site.
Home Trust Visa no longer gives cash back when used in other countries. You'll have to switch to Brim Mastercard if you want the 1% cash back which they also reward when used in other countries and there's no foreign transaction fee. That's the only no annual fee no FTF world wide card left that pays foreign cash back. Or, you can get an annual fee card like Scotia Passport Visa, HSBC World Elite Mastercard etc

I did not know that Simplii gives 4% on restaurant as I don't deal with them.Do you know if this rate applies to restaurants outside the country? It could compensate for the Forex if so and still give sa healthy return.
Thanks for the tip. Might have to look into that as I'm sure we spend 5K on CCs in restaurants, although a few of them don't take credit cards of any kind.
It's not available in Québec. If you are in Québec, you are out of luck.

Tangerine standard current offer is 5% on $5k first 3 month.
They also have a targeted offer is the 15% bonus on $2k for the first 3 months. No annual fee and you can decide to keep or not afterwards.
Log in to your account and see if the special offer shows up. Its fairly new and their reps seem confused when I asked them about it. So make sure you get the targeted offer one which is much easier to attain.
And I have never seen CC pays 4% as a standard sustainable offer, cuz even after taking into account charging you 20% interest potentially on late payment, there is no juice for the issuer.
