DUCA sent out an email this morning with a similar warning, of an offer of a 6.5% GIC:
Fake GIC scams are on the rise
Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to deceive people, and their latest tactic involves fake GIC offers. These scams are so convincing that even experienced investors have fallen victim. How this scam works
Scammers create fake websites that look just like trusted financial institutions. These sites advertise GICs with offers that seem too good to be true—high returns, limited-time deals, and exclusive rates. The site looks professional, featuring a well-known bank’s logo, branding, and even fake customer service numbers.Once you call the number on the site, a scammer posing as an advisor offers you a high-interest GIC. They send official-looking documents and provide a direct phone number for follow-ups. Everything seems legitimate—until you transfer your money and later realize it was all a scam.
