Alterna has a slightly complicated linking process of filling out a form and the requirement of a void cheque.
so I'm wondering how would:
- Linking to a saving account work?(no cheques)
- Modify the VOID cheque provided by Tangerine for my chequing account to show the account number of my saving account. Would that suddenly mean I can pull funds from my saving account?

I don't think they would let you do this. I had enough trouble with a legitimate cheque that they didn't like the look of, never mind an altered one. I don't think any financial institution would accept an altered cheque for that matter. The cheque is evidence that you are real and legit and that this is an account that they can do business with. If you mess around with it, you will seem suspect.

So I can't use the digital VOID cheque provided by Tang to link external accounts? (even if unaltered?)
The digital void cheque is a PDF, so methods such as photoshop, or even acrobat could "alter" the cheque while having being legit? (and all info on the altered version is still correct)

Tangerine Bank savings accounts support direct deposit. But, I don't think they allow pre-authorized debits.
Tangerine Bank does provide direct deposit forms with the relevant transit, institution, and account numbers. Sometimes, that all people, like employers, are looking for from the void cheque.
Ask Alterna Bank if a direct deposit form for your Tangerine savings account will do.

I agree with SG, Loonie and Norman1 on this. Most FIs are generally acceptable to receiving either a stamped Direct Deposit Form (DDF) and are generally pretty "loose" with "stamped," in that it can typically be bank branch's name and address stamp, not necessarily a teller/CSR branch domicile stamp with date. And, of those that accept even other methods, they'll generally accept original bank statements or unaltered PDF eStatements, so long as at least the branch name or transit number, account number and your address are on it. They don't usually need the institution number or branch transit number either, as they can look this up so long as your FI's "name" or "logo" and "branch name" appear on the eStatement. 🙂

The Tangerine VOID Cheque PDF that gets generated is only for Tangerine Chequing accounts.
For Tangerine Savings, if you go to the "Forms" option on the left hand side after you're logged in, select "Direct Deposit/Pre-Authorized Debit Form," or something like that, enter the name of "Alterna Bank" in the "payee" field along with their branch name and address but you can leave the field blank for what it's for (i.e., direct deposit/payroll deposit/bill payment) and Tangerine will generate you a Direct Deposit Form on their letterhead. Print it out, preferably in colour and you can also save it in PDF format and email it to them. 🙂
Cheers,
Doug
